question on performance?!
question on performance?!
went to the track and im getting into doing some mods..i want some rims , 19s or 20s, thinking about rpms in chrome or silver...my question is will it really make that much of a difference performance wise from my stock 17s?? like i said im not toooo worried about the weight difference but if its gonna make my car much slower than id reconsider.. thanks
Rotational weight is going to have a fairly significant effect on the performance of the car. I went form 25lb 19s to 19lb 19s and noticed a huge difference. I know there are some coatings being produced by companies like Racing Hart, Volk and Enkei which are very similar to chrome w/o the weight. If you are only concerned about times at the drag strip, you can always put some stickier tires on your stock wheels to throw on at the track.
thats true good point im also on a lil bit of budget the rpms 505 had the mesh look i like , volks are sick but alotttta money ..i mean if i get the chrome wat do u guys think the difference on track will be??? like major or unnoticeable??
you can get super light 19s like those mentioned above - the benefit there is that the tires will be lower profile (to keep the same height) - and because there's less rubber, the tire will be much lighter too. the ride will be harsher (depends on the tire though)
I believe rotational weight is equivalent to 10 times the actual weight. so 1 extra pound on the wheel is like 10 more on the car. saving 5 pounds per wheel equals 10 for the rear axle, which is a 100 lb equivalent weight saving.
i don't think the same holds true for the front wheels, since they are not part of the drivetrain (so the formula does not apply).

If you are dead serious about performance, 18s are about the largest you should go.
rcdash: 19" tires aren't any lighter than 18" tires. I just checked the weights of 245/40/18, 245/35/19, 275/40/18 and 275/35/19 for a couple tires, and the weights are about the same, the differences being less than 1 pound.
