Change to 16"wheels

I'm having trouble getting 225/235 17" stagger snows. A 16" wheel package was suggested. What do you think?

Re: Change to 16"wheels

Are you rude or something????? I went to this site because I was told I could get good advice. Chill with the attitude. You may be a vehicle guru, but I'm not. I don't need the elitis persona. I'm also not accustomed to using a site like this. I can adeptly handle my own research without going to strangers, and I will in the future. A forum was a new experience and not one I'll experience again. However, I'm sure there must be someone else who enjoys your petty comments. I'll get off of your line. I don't need the additional frustration. This has given me a new perspective on snobbery. Thank you to all who were willing to provide information in the spirit of comradeship. I hope you all enjoy your continued correspondence.
Merci,
Michele

Re: Change to 16"wheels

Do you have the brembo brakes? I'm not sure that 16" wheels will clear those on the coupe.

I think jackass (see above poster) meant the wheels would look lame because 16" is too small for the g35 (coupe AND sedan)

However they are winter wheels so I guess it doesn't really matter anyhow.

Re: Change to 16"wheels

Thank you very much for your advice. I think I'll try calling the sales person who sold me the car. He may be able to steer me in the right direction. I'm not really sure which brakes I have.

Spoke to sales person. He agrees with you that 16" winter tires would be fine. He's going to check on 17" & 16" for me. He also suggested steel wheels for the winter. I guess the Blizzaks don't come in the right size. So, he suggested Pirelli. I'll know on Monday. Also,I don't have the brakes that you spoke of. My coupe is an AT they only come with the MT.

Re: Change to 16"wheels

If the 16s will clear your brakes, they'll actually be better for winter wheels. A higher profile tire actually bites a bit better than a similar tire in a lower profile on snow and ice. Also, they'll be quite a bit cheaper, and give a better ride on frozen ruts in the road.

Also make sure the wheel offset is appropriate for the car. If you go with alloy wheels, get one that is coated rather than polished finish as they with stand up to the road salt better. Personally, I don't like steel wheels on this type of car, even for the winter. There should be many wheels and styles suitable in alloy. I've heard good things about the Dunlop winter tires and they should be better priced than the Pirellis.

Re: Change to 16"wheels

Thanks so much. I've gotten so much conflicting info. over the past two days. I just talked to a Firestone dealer and he says that "tire wise" I should be putting the same size tire, Blizzak 225 LM 22", on all four wheels for better traction. I told him that I wasn't sure if that would be a problem with the handling of the car itself. Glad I've got another month to research this.

Re: Change to 16"wheels

Talk with gsedanman. I think he put the same size tire all round on his coupe for the winter. Not sure if he went with 16s or 17s, but if he did the same size all round with no problems with the VDC, you should be able to do the same thing. Just PM him and ask.

Re: Change to 16"wheels

At the risk of looking like a total dope, I don't know what PM means. Otherwise, I would contact him.
On another note, Direct Tire says that they can accomodate the swagger (said we have to do it so the sensors will be able to recognize the set-up for the VSD and ABS). Told me that the car was set up to acknowledge the difference in sizes. He suggestded a 225/50 front and 225/55 rear (Blizzak)with a Sported Techno wheel for $1131. I can't find the wheels on their site. So, I'm a little hesitant to order. I want to know what they look like before they're sitting on my porch. I'm sure there must be another way to post so that I'm not driving only you crazy. You must be ready to share the pain from another real newbie. Let me know and I'll give you some slack. I really appreciate your patience.

To the left under 'Control Panel', you'll see 'Send Private'. Click on it to send 'private mail' and enter gsedanman in the 'username' box.

No problem, we're generally a patient bunch here. Any questions, feel free to ask or PM me.

Or you can click on their name in the heading of a post they made, and click the "Send Private Mail" button in their profile.

There's one in every crowd, emboldened by the anonymity of the Internet, preying on the weak and defenseless (newbies). But it becomes apparent, sometimes, that rabbits have fangs. LOL!

Don't get too bent out of shape, Michele. This is one of the more civil sites I have visited...
