Such thing as a light weight 20" wheel?
Hey guys, I'm trying to do some research on some new wheels for the ride, and was wondering if there is such thing as a light weight 20" wheel. I know most don't think of performance when putting a 20" wheel on, but is it possible? I already have 20's but I really hate how sluggish they can make the car feel. Any insite would be apprciated, wheel junkies! Thanks in advance
First, good luck getting much actual wheel weight info for larger rims. I had a very hard time getting exact weights from mfg or retailers. Many times they just don't know because the focus is on style for many of the larger rims. However, in some cases you can get a rough estimate or you may get lucky. Also, Tire Rack does list weights for most of the wheels they sell.
In general, forged is best, but low pressure/vacuum cast are lighter than gravity cast wheels. Also, all things equal, obviously a wheel design with fewer & thinner spokes will be less than a large plate style rim. And of course the distribution of the weight is important too, as it affects you more the more the weight is towards the outside.
Good luck.

Thanks for the information. As you stated above, I have been finding it difficult to find wheel weight information for 20" wheels.. I will most likely end up going with a custom wheel.. we'll see...
Another reason you may be feeling more sluggish with 20's is due to the larger overall wheel diameter. With 20's, you will need more torque applied to the wheels to move them compared to wheels of stock diameter. Its the same concept as using smaller gears as opposed to larger gears. It will take more power to turn the wheel, but you will gain a slightly higher top speed, although that really doesnt matter, or make much noticeable difference. The width of the wheel also has similar effects because it introduces more mass to move.
Also, I dont think anyone makes 20" light weight racing wheels because the tire used would be too thin (ie 30 or 35 series tires) and wouldnt perform optimally. Like what the others have said... your best bet would be a custom forged wheel. (iforged, jline, dpe, hre etc)

^ Well said.It is true.Using a 30 series tire on a 10" wide rim will save weight and closer to oem diameter. That is why I run 285-30-19,it is the same as the oem overall diameter.
