Brake Wear

Hey guys,

I'm not a car guru or anything but was wondering if you guys could help me. I got the letter regarding the brake wear replacment. My car has 6000 miles on it and the dealer said I still have 20% brake left in the front and wouldn't replace them.

20% after 6000 miles? Are they going to replace them with a better brake pad or something....seems kinda costly replacing brakes every 8000 miles or so. After the 3 year/36k mile coverage for the brake pads/rotors, am I going to have to shell out $ every 6 months for new ones?

I have an Acura TL with 47000 miles and I'm just now thinking about getting new brake pads. I drive both cars the same so I don't think I'm gunning/slamming on the brakes on the G35 or anything.

I really hope they use a better brake pad or something. I didn't spend that much $ on a car that is going to need brakes pads every 6 months and possibly rotors.

Thanks

Re: Brake Wear

Are you sure he didn't say 20% worn off, (so like 80% left), that's hard to believe in 6k miles! I would certainly hope Infiniti is replacing the pads/rotors with a longer lasting pad, this type of wear can really hurt them down the road if they don't! Plus, can you imagine the cost to them if they have to be replacing pads and rotors a couple of times over the warranty period, Geez! Anyone know how we can find this out?

Re: Brake Wear

all i know is that the other night with my wheels off i inspected my rotors, and they have a huge lip on the outer edge.. i have 6000 miles and change, and the rotors look like someone grated them with a cheese grater... i am expecting new rotors at 7500 mile service.. i am gonna drive extra hard now to insure they give me them...

I can't believe how badly eroded the rotor's were after only 6000 miles? Anyone else notice this on there whip, and did you get them replaced for free???

Peace
-Eric

Re: Brake Wear

I just noticed a lip on my rotors this weekend. I have 11k on my car, so I was was thinking it's ‘normal’ for our Gs. How much of the rotor has to be worn away for Infiniti to replace them?

Re: Brake Wear

yep, 20% left. I have the invoice right here and it says:

"Front brakes checked ok at this time-still have 20% pad"

and my car has almost exactly 6000 miles on it.

I just bought this thing 4 months ago so it looks like my car is eating 20% of the brake pads/month.

This is crazy. I've never heard of a car that eats brakes pads that fast.

Re: Brake Wear

Have you called the number on the letter, and asked them about changing to a different pad/rotor? I would, and will when I have a few minutes later, demand to know what is up with that! I still don't know if I believe the 20% at 6k thing, I mean I believe you, but wonder about the service person writing that! You could take the car elsewhere and have them inspected! Let Infiniti replace the brakes a few times, this will cost them big time, in more ways than one!!!!

Re: Brake Wear

I called Infiniti Customer Affairs and asked them about this. The guy told me they have had several complaints about premature brake wear. He said their engineers are working to find out the cause and until then, they have this brake/rotor replacement program for 3 years/36k miles.

He said after the cause is found a recall will be issued for the permenant fix to be applied. He said until then, the same brakes/rotors that are currently implemented will be used to keep replacing the ones that are wearing prematurely.

I'm not sure if he was telling me that just to shut me up or not. It kinda sounded like he wasn't certain on anything other than the fact they would replace the brakes/rotors as needed for 3 years/36k miles. I suggest you guys that have this same problem give their Customer Affairs a call. The number I used was 1800 662 6200 option 7, then option 2.

Re: Brake Wear

I called the number on the "brake" letter, 800-947-9115, and I was told they were replacing the pad with a different type, not the hi-performance pads that are the culprit in the premature wear! LOL, "several" complaints, huh? That's an understatement!

Re: Brake Wear

I just had my front brakes changed under warranty, @ 7K Miles. The service guy told me I had 80% left, but since I complained about "squeeking" they changed them. 20% left is crazy at just 6k miles, I go through some crazy twisties for fun every so often and only managed to wear down 20%...
But hey it's under warranty so we don't have spend all that money, oh, my rotors were fine (FYI)

Re: Brake Wear

I just took my AT coupe in to Miller Infiniti at 9800 miles due to sever front rotor wear(no rear rotor wear). I was told I have 40% left so I will need to take it in to get brake replacement at about 17,000. They also told me that the front rotor wear is due to the front rotor being wider than the front brake pads.

What does that mean, "wider than the pads"? Aren't all rotors wider than the pads?

Re: Brake Wear

What is ‘severe front rotor wear’? I’m asking cause my front rotors are worn too, but I don’t know what qualifies as severe.
