I am about to get a set of Volk GT-C's and want to have the face powder coated. The shop is going to charge me way more if they have to mask off the lip and since they are 2-pc with the bolts I was wondering if I can just take them apart?

Has anyone done it?

It can be done on the GT-C's as they are bolted 2 piece wheels. Not sure on the torque specs though so you may want to find out so you can reassemble them correctly

If you look at the back of the rim and it is not welded you should be able to. Me personally Ttrank, wouldn't recomend doing it yourself because some wheels have beeds that you may crack when removing the face from the barrell. Just have them mask off the wheel and powdercoat. That way you wont have to worry about damaging the structural integrity and dependability of the wheel. Also shop around for places that will powdercoat the wheel for you.

Thanks guys.

This place only does powder coating and will do them for $60 each but he said that was for the whole rim. I am not sure what has to be done to mask off the lip. Maybe I can prep the rims and bring them in. That green painters tape is not too expensive.

you need heat resistant tape, which the green painter's tape isn't

Do you know of any tape that is good to 400 degrees? I guess the shop would have it but I was trying to save some money and prep them myself.

not anything you can buy at a normal store. Ask your PC shop to sell you a few rolls, but IMO removing the face is the best idea

if you take them apart it is near impossible to get it right put back together. youll almost always have some wobbles and bearing problems later on

if u take them apart its easy, takes 15 mins a wheel

reassembly the center is pre balanced so u cant put em back wrong.. u just line up the valve stem hole.

tq is 25ft/lb per bolt.

id reconsider pc'ing them

Thank you.

It looks like they have blue thread locker on them so I assume I should use the same to put them back together.

thread locker should stay on the bolts when u take them out..

like i said the whole process is VERY easy.. easier w/ volks than any other wheel because the volks dont have 2 pieces of hoop.. meaning you dont have to silicone between the hoops after you remove..

you can even take them apart w/ the tires on and air in the tires.. that what i did because the stem it attatched to the hoop and u just remove the face out the front.

any more assistance lemme know, ive done this on 2 sets of volks in past and a set of race CCW

:-D

damn. that's wide.

wouldn't taking out the center face lose the balance of the wheel itself? or i guess the torquing of the bolts will handle that... as long as the bolts are torqued at the same spec.

fwiw, down_shift took his GT-C's apart and got them PC'ed. I'm doing the same with my Maidos. It's not hard.

Awesome. If I decide to keep these I will have the faces done in a different color.

Thanks!
