Would you buy Snow Package in Feb???
Would you buy Snow Package in Feb???
I am supposed to pick up my 2004 fully loaded (no Sat Radio) Black on Black 6MT coupe next week, which probably means early Feb (Can you tell by the description that I'm a little excited???) I've recently been following the site to get some info and meet some fellow G drivers. I've heard all of the snow horror stories and plan on picking up a set of snow wheels and tires. My question is that since the weather normally begins to break in Philly in late Feb/March anyway would you just take your chances and get the package next year when the early specials come out?? When do you plan on putting your stock 18's back on. 1000-1400 dollars seems like a lot for a month of driving. Are the tires that scary in just cold temperatures because hopefully the worst of the snow is behind us?
Re: Would you buy Snow Package in Feb???
congrats on your new ride....Coupe is an awsome car!!!! the 18' tire package is great but not in our area....not during the winter months...ice and snow will make the tires useless for the most part so If you can find a winter package at this point it would probably be smart...I took delivery in late oct...and didn't think much about snows until the first snow we had in Dec...then it was much too late to find anything ..check out tire rack...anyway...LOL with your new car..and if it snows...even alittle....be real careful or you may regret not getting snows!!!!!2old4this

If you need to drive in the snow YES. The Michelin Pilots are useless and dangerous in the snow. I have the 17" Blizzak LM22's mounted on ASA K3 rims made by BBS. I got mine from Tire Rack. Picture of rim below

Re: Would you buy Snow Package in Feb???
Congrats.
The reality is that you will need a set of dedicated snow tires...eventually. So, it's all a matter of time whether you buy a set now or next season. We still got a solid 2 months of potential snowfall...unless you have a back up car OR not plan on driving your ride in inclement weather, get the snow tires now. Of course, the selection may be slim. The popular choice on the board is Blizzaks. I opted for the Pirellis and dropped down to 17s.
I'm planning on putting my (stock) Michelins back on in April.

You may not have a choice if you want to drive it. especially as cold as its been this winter. You may find some decent end of season close outs.

Re: Would you buy Snow Package in Feb???
Have any of you gotten a deal from the tire rack or any of the other sites?? Any names I should ask for. I've been quoted $1300 for Snowsports (Pirelli) and 17" Fox 5 Sport Rims.
Re: Would you buy Snow Package in Feb???
I paid $1400 complete for 17" ASA K3 rims which are made by BBS and Blizzak LM22 Snows - Tire Rack. Call and talk to a guy named Dallas - He is an expert at the G set up.

Re: Would you buy Snow Package in Feb???
Thanks for the help. I found a friend who's got the "hook up" with a tire store they are attempting to order just the tires for me at cost. If I can do it all for $600 then I guess I would stick with the 18's and snows and just have them changed every year rather then buy a whole rim set.
Re: Would you buy Snow Package in Feb???
I would not recommend swapping the tires. The stock rims and tires are expensive and easily damaged on a tire machine. if you are going to do it with the G - do it right...

Re: Would you buy Snow Package in Feb???
Congratulations on your pending new ride. I have similar since Oct. 1, and it's a great car.
I'm in Baltimore. Driving with the summer tires. As far as driving in the cold, my experience is that as long as I drive like a cautious old man in the cold, I have no problems. Most of my driving is on two-lane roads during rush hour, so driving like a cautious old man is more the norm than I care for. Sorta enforced by the conditions.
Ice and snow gets ugly. I have lost control coming up on ice unexpectedly, even driving like a COM. Fortunately, had plenty of room around me. No damage. Snow hasn't been as much of a problem for me. I have some flexibility on working at home so I've simply waited until the plow comes through and salts the street. I've had to go in late a couple of times.
My two cents.
