Installing stock tire pressure transmitter on rims
Installing stock tire pressure transmitter on rims
Anyone know if the low tire pressure sensor-transmitter can be removed from the stock rims and bolted right on to aftermarket rims? Do the stock rims have a larger than normal valve stem hole, or could this just be a simple plug and play installation?
It sure would be nice if we could just unbolt the stock transmitter and bolt it into the aftermarket rim. (see attached picture).
Thanks

OK, I tried a JPEG at 1.92 megs, then a bmp at only 772k. For the keyboard jockeys . . . what am I doing wrong?

Trying to post a picture that's too large. 100k limit, jpeg or gif format only.
Shrink that sucker.. we don't need 1600x1200 full-res from your camera.. a 640x480 is plenty big, and "medium" on jpeg quality is plenty good for web viewing.

Got it! Thanks.
Now back to the orginal question: any reason why this transmitter cannot be mounted on an aftermarket rim without any modifications?

Re: Installing stock tire pressure transmitter on rims
some wheels allow for the tire pressure moniters to be installed, but you have to ask the manufacturer of the wheels to get exact answer. i believe volks and roja wheels can be used with sensors...
Re: Installing stock tire pressure transmitter on rims
Any "standard" wheel that has a screw type valve will work. Unfortuantly our volks have a right-angle valve and is proprietery and will not work. There are ways to get it to work but its more involving. People on my350z have used long bands to go aroudn the perimeter of the wheel and attached the sensor directly to the inside of the wheel. Cons of this are sometimes the band comes loose and the sensor is free-floating inside the wheel, causing noise and sometimes damage... I just removed mine, wasn't that important to me. the TPS light only comes on when I drive about 75+ mph for a long period of time (about 20 mins or so).
Re: Installing stock tire pressure transmitter on rims
As long as the TPS is able to sit reasonably flat when mounted it will work just fine. These sensors have built in centrifugal triggers that only turns itself ON when enough force is acted upon it (at ~40 mph) in order to conserve the internal battery.
Be certain to follow the procedure outlined in the service manual for mounting tire ... or you'll likely end up snapping the sensors in half when the tire slips onto the wheel.

BTW thx I don't think there is a battery, I think they use kenetic energy. While being shaken they charge up. After I took mine out and shook them there is this little rattling noise which lead me to believe so.
Re: Installing stock tire pressure transmitter on rims
Heh ... you mean like those Rolex watches? Those are neat.
Unfortunately, this information came straight from the manufacture of the TPS. They are power by a small internal lithium battery, which in their term "under general operating conditions" will last for 8-10 years before the battery goes defunk. The clicking you are hearing while shaking would be the centrifugal switch.
Hope that helps.
