Installing springs?

Hey, finally got my springs rims and tires and ready to install the springs. Me and my friend who has built a 1000 hp supra and whos father has a body shop, will be installing springs on my G35 sedan. Ive never installed springs before so am pretty clueless and will probably be doing most of the watching lol. What are the procedures to install springs? He said ill have to take rear seats out, is that true? And any other info is greatly appreciated to watch out for during the install. Thanks!
Also, does anyone know of some good lug nuts to put on my 19 inch rims? Thanks again, Martin

Re: Installing springs?

Here's a link to my how to with pics.

http://www.g-owners.com/article_read.asp?id=12

REVISION to the how to on the front, spring compressor NOT required to get the spring/shock assembly off the car.

1.On the front, remove the sway bar end link bolt on the suspension arm first. Use a floor jack and raise up the suspension arm until the bolt can be pushed out of the arm.

2.Remove the nut on the bottom shock bolt at the lower suspension arm. Use the floor jack to move the suspension up or down a bit to allow the bolt to slide out.

3. Remove the 3 nuts inside the engine bay that attach the upper shock mount to the car.

4. Unbolt the brake line's and pull off the ABS speed sensor lines.

5. Push down on the suspension and start to walk out the spring/shock assembly. BE CAREFULL to not rip out the speed sensor line when you remove the assembly out of the wheel well.

6. Start to compress the spring for removal. When you've made a fair amount of progess, you might want to attempt to loosen the upper bolt on the shock shaft at the shock mount. It will be very difficult to start. The secret I found was to purchase a special craftsman wrench that curves downward and allow's me to get full contact with the nut and attach a cresent wrench higher up the shaft to stop the shaft from spinning. Also it helps to stand on the whole assembly to help stop the upper mount from wanting to turn. It is normal to need A LOT of force to break the nut loose. DO NOT REMOVE THE NUT YET, compress the spring full before you do that.

When I either getting coilovers or reinstall my Z shocks, I plan on doing a totally new how to with pics.

Re: Installing springs?

Just to clarify... You DO need a spring compressor (you can get one for $10 at an autoparts store) to remove the strut nut--but it can be done once the assembly has been removed from the car.

If you have an impact wrench, that nut will come right off.

Re: Installing springs?

It's easier to break the nut lose if some tension remains on the upper shock mount. Other wise you have to isolate just the upper mount from spinning while you attempt to break that nut lose. Keeping some spring tension on it means you have the whole spring/shock assembly preventing the mount from turning when you try and break the nut lose. I recommend releaving 1/2 the spring tension tension with the spring compressor, break the nut free, then compress the spring til the spirng does not touch the shock mount, then you can remove the nut and upper shock mount.

Re: Installing springs?

You mention torquing everything to spec. Where do we get those torque specs?

Re: Installing springs?

When I said me and my friend who has built etc. , I meant to comma and comment what his background is with modifying or working on cars is like. The way I typed it it sounded like I was part of it but wasnt at all. He has with his father for body work and some engine, he sent it overseas to Japan for all of the engine work but when he had 400-500 horses he did that all himself! Misunderstanding. Anyway I get them on tomorrow, cant wait!! Ill take pics, Martin

Re: Installing springs?

Sinurgy, those torque spec's are listed in the shop manuel, which use's a picture diagram. I did not want to try and type out each bolt and explain it's location and give the torque spec, figured I'd end up confusing everyone. Best way to get the spec's would be for somone to post the PDF file out of that manuel, which I tried, but you can't read it well enough to make out the small text numbers. Maybe someone else can have better luck.
