So I need tires after destroying my current set with numerous HPDEs...

Current tire choices:

Bridgestone Potenza RE070 (GG in rain, heaviest tire of the bunch by far +3 lbs or so, needs proper heat cycling, OEM NSX-R, CTR, S2kCR tire, 140 treadwear)
Bridgestone Potenza RE01R (slightly less GG in rain, needs proper heat cycling, slightly less grip than RE070, 180 treadwear)
Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Pole Position (No strengths or weaknesses relative to tires in comparison)
Kumho Ecsta MX (least performance of the group, but budget choice, EXCELLENT tire for the money, 220 treadwear)
Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 (rain friendly, very expensive, 220 treadwear)

Any other tires recommended? I will only consider HIGH PERFORMANCE tires. Rain/wet performance is not a major concern.

The RE050A Pole Positions are *SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER* than OEM 050A.

All tires considered are 225/45/17 front, 255/40/17 rears.

Current tires are 215/45/17 front 255/40/17 rear. 070's are about 3lbs heavier in each corner than a 'regular' tire, but have a wider contact patch... almost half an inch wider.

They lose all grip after 1 prep + 5 heat cycles or so.... not an option. Otherwise I'd be running Advan A048's daily

 

PS2, hands down.

 

^ Are you serious? PS2's don't even seem to be a consideration with the average s2k guy, so I don't have any direct comparisons with the S02/050A/050APP/01R, which are common choices...

RE-01R's... HANDS DOWN!!! there's no question that the RE-01R's are the best bridgestone tire i've ever driven on, and i've had em all, S03's, RE750's, RE050's, RE960's... you name it, i've had em.

my 225/45/18 RE-01R's stretched on a 9" wheel handled better than when i had 275 S03's on a 9.5" wheel.

The 3lbs less on each corner over the RE070 is well worth the very very very slight grip decrease.

It's 3lbs less on each corner, but the contact patch on the RE070 is actually larger by .5 inches, even with the same size tire. The contact patch is absolutely HUGE.

My understanding is that the 215 070 has similar grip to a 245 01R.

The tires I've tried in order of dry grip:

070>01R>050APP>S02>050A>S03

I'm tempted to get 01R's again, but the price on 070 is actually cheaper.

The 3 lb difference is from the (much much) stiffer sidewall.

mmmm a lot of things to consider. I do definately need to get an alignment ASAP after I get the new tires mounted as well.

I've noticed the 070 seems to get greasier than the 01R on the first heat cycle.

I've heard good things about the RE11, which is the 01R replacement.

My biggest incentive to get the 01R is that it is MUCH more rain friendly than the 070. The 070's turn into slicks at 6/32"... Treadwear for me will probably be about the same on either tire.

 

Can you provide some more information on those tires for me please?

Of the top 10 tires rated by CR, the Goodyear is among the highest tread life and lowest road noise, while obviously performing very high in all other categories. It was really only deducted points for rolling resistance, which I suppose might impact MPG slightly. I can't tell you anything about their weight but I've been real happy with them so far.

Tire Rack is showing the RE050A PP to outperform the Goodyear Eagle GS-D3 in virtually every performance category.

The RE050A PP is a very recent design... only 2 years old.

Thank you for the suggestion, but I think I will pass on the GS-D3 if it performs at under RE050APP levels.

Any other tires that I should look into?
