Aftermarket (Wheel) Insurance

Well, after an 8 week wait, I have finally received my Iforged Evolutions in a brushed aluminum finish. Let me tell you that the wait is worth it.

Now that I have aftermarket wheels, I know the probability of my wheels getting jacked has just increased. Therfore, I wanted to know if I can obtain insurance for aftermarket products such as wheels.

How many out there think it is worth it to get this type of insurance (assuming it is available)? How much should I expect my premium to increase? If available, do all insurance companies provide it or just a select few? Any info. is appreciated.

BTW, I tried to post some pics last night however was unsuccessful as the pics were larger than the size limitation. Anyone know how to resize the pics so i can post them?

Thanks.

I don't know how many of them would provide it, but call your current insurance provider and ask an agent. That's the only way to really find out.

I'd think you'd definately have to add a rider to your policy explicitly mentioning any mods you want covered, their default coverage is only to return the car to how it was delivered from the factory.

Most companies will do a seperate policy for aftermarket parts for a small addition to your monthly bill. I didn't add mine because if they're stolen I'll get the replacement value of the factory wheels and it's pretty much the same amount.

i thought wheel locks were an anti-theft piece since you need your own wheel lock unit to take the wheels off...

if you dont have wheel locks i guess you gotta check with your insurance to see if they cover your aftermarket mods but it depends on how nice your insurance company is..

Total for wheels and tires is about $4300 depending on tire price at that time.

unless you get some really phat and expensive wheels, i think all insurances will cover the stock wheels/tires if they're stolen. and the dealer prices for the stock wheels are pretty high. therefore, just tell the insurance company that your stock wheels are stolen and use that money to replace the aftermarket wheels. with the added premiums that you will save, it'll come out to be the same.

I added mine to my insurance, they told me to save the receipt that way i would get that amount i paid for the wheels. i think it came out to almost $5 more a month on my current policy. Tires will always make the final price fluctuate.

Re: Aftermarket (Wheel) Insurance

are you absolutely sure they will give you exactly what you paid for the wheels? i'm not aware of too many insurance companies that will give you replacement value. most i've seen only give fair market value which puts into account depreciation.

however, if you are correct and they offer full replacement value for only an extra $5/month.....woohoo, i would take it too. that's a great deal for an extra $60 a year.

Z2G, before i added that policy i verified with them and they did verify that it would be what i paid for those wheels at the time of purchase and not a depreciated value. You're right not many insurance companies will do that, but if anyone is interested its www.usaa.com it's for military members and every year i compare their rates with other big name insurance companies and no ever comes close. if you're in the military or have an immediate member give it a shot.

Re: Aftermarket (Wheel) Insurance

I also USAA insurance. Last week they have added the wheels & tires to my policy ($4500) with no additional costs to my policy. They just told me to take pictures & keep receipts. BTW, I'm not in the military. They do have great rates....
