Snow Tires

Hey for any of you that sadly have to drive your G in the snow what tires do you recommend. I'm stuck in choosing studs or stud-less like blizzaks. One thing also to get home i drive up an unpaved hill about 100-150 yards and its at a 45-55 deg. angle. This is my first winter with my G35X. Thanks for any replies.

I too have to drive the G in the snow! I wish I had a beater or at least a bigger garage. After doing a bunch of research I decided to go with Blizzak WS-50's for winter tires on the factory 17's. I went with those mainly because tirerack had them for $75 a piece and I couldn't pass it up. I really wanted the Dunlop WinterSport M3 but $137 a piece... I don't know where you're located but i'm pretty sure studded tires are illegal here in ohio unless its a plow vehicle. anyone? Good Luck with the search.

Where do you live? You really dont need snow tires on an X. I live in Minnesota and survived 4 winters in an 04 X on standard A/S...

Amen. 5 winters in Chicago with A/S Goodyears (now V-rated Eagle Responsedges) in my 5-A coupe as a daily driver and no problems.

See this Car and Driver 2006 tire comparo:

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...ons_tech_stuff

Dedicated winter tires improve braking in snow from 50 mph by only 8% over M+S rated Goodyear A/S RS-As.

Of several Chicago area Goodyear or Bridgestone company store which I surveyed none even stocks snow tires. They all responded that there is no demand from customers for them and good M+S will provide enough traction for drivers' needs.

I'll contribute my experience driving a G35X loaner. This is just my experience and you should still get other's opinions so you can make your own decision. I have an '05 RWD with dedicated snow tires on them. When dropping my car off for service once, I was given an "X" with Eagle RSA's on them (i.e., all-season). The "X" with the A/S's had a lot more traction than my RWD with dedicated snow tires during a snow shower with accumulating snow on the ground. Even when going up my driveway which I would not call much of an incline.

You must mean Goodyear Assurance Triple-Tred.

My bro-in-law fitted the Triple-Treds on my sister's 2003 BMW 528 Touring (RWD) and these get them up their 100 ft long 35 degree incline driveway without any trouble, even with ice covered by snow.

Lots of BMWs and E class Benzes in our buildings parking lot have the Triple-Treds as replacement tires.

Most Just Tire and Discount Tire locations keep plenty of these in stock.

Still I'd recommend that you pick up a decent pair of snow tires.

I'm going to be picking up a pair of the Blizzak WS-50's rlea27 mentioned. Cant really beat 75 bucks for a pair of Bizzaks.

i purchased a set of stock 17s and put some 215/55/17 Blizzak WS-50s on there and the differece is night and day. Great tires, I dont have an X but i can imagine AWD plus snowtires = snowmobile. Chicago's winter last year would have sucked without them. As previously stated, Tirerack has a closeout on them $75 which is a great price they are normally $110!

I got lucky and found a slightly used set on Craigslist in my area. I feel much better heading out in the snow with those on.....worked great in 3 separate 8" snows last year.

Since I have no experiance with the all wheel drive G I just want to point out that alot of the advantage of dedicated snow tires is that the compound will not freeze. That is the one issue with either summer only or a/s tires is that under 32 degrees the compound of the tire will freeze and there will be a huge loss of traction.

Like I said I have no experiance with all whell drive I just wanted to point that out about winter tires

Canadian chiming in here from the home of REAL winter conditions. i drove my RWD G last yr on blizzaks (225/50/17's) and it was great. i found i had to turn the VDC off alot tho, the X's are a whole different beast though, i have a friend with one and he has been on all seasons for 3 yrs with no issues. all season on a RWD g tho is SUICIDE in winter!

^+1 to cheap A/S on a RWD.

I did 2 months of winter when i got my G last winter on Cooper CS4s. It was just awful. I could get around, but barelly...

Now the X, again, unless you live in a place that just gets dumped on, snow tires arent a necessity. Had A/S on the 04 X and no problems. Dont plan on putting snows on the 08 either.
