will these tires rub in the front

hi, i couldn't find a specific answer in the search area, quick question will 235/50/17 rub in the front, the guy who sells tires insists they will, the original is 215 which is 2cm narrower than the 235, i turned the wheel both directions while looking at them and i see lots of clearance my sedans isn't lowered or anything like that, just stock

No it won't rub while mounted on the stock wheel.

One of my friends ran 255/40/18 tires on the front with no problem on his 04 sedan
Edit: changed size from 255/50/18 to 255/40/18

I want to be sure I heard this right. Are you saying that 255/50/18's didn't rub at all and that they fit w/o any mods to the car? Was he running the same size on the back? I've been interested in 225/60/17's, thinking this would be the max size I could get (going for hieght and not width) for the front.

I've seen several 03-04 sedans running 235/50/17 w/o rubbing, even when the car has several passengers. I've also seen 1 with 235/55/17. The height of the 235/50 is pretty much the same as the 215/55.

Actually I was wrong they weren't 50s they were 40s. They were 255/40/10 PS2s on 8.5" x 18 rims with a 42 mm offset. He was running them front and back.
He had a mild drop.
Here it is (InTgr8rs past ride)

2" difference in height between 255/50's and 255/40's. Thanks for clarifying.

Maciejk, I dont know what year your car is. However I have an 06 Sedan which runs stock 234/45 18's. My car will have the same clearance as yours (assuming its an 03-06 which is the forum you posted in) unless you have changed your brake package.

There isn't much difference in size between 235/50 17 and 235/45 18's...

Stock Tire - 235/45R18
Section Width: 9.25 in 235 mm
Rim Diameter: 18 in 457.2 mm
Rim Width Range: 7.5 - 9 in
Overall Diameter: 26.32 in 668.52 mm
Sidewall Height: 4.16 in 105.66 mm
Radius: 13.16 in 334.26 mm
Circumference: 82.68 in 2100.0 mm
Revs per Mile: 790.2

Question Tire - 235/50R17
Section Width: 9.25 in 235 mm
Rim Diameter: 17 in 431.8 mm
Rim Width Range: 6.5 - 8.5 in
Overall Diameter: 26.25 in 666.75 mm
Sidewall Height: 4.62 in 117.34 mm
Radius: 13.12 in 333.24 mm
Circumference: 82.46 in 2094.4 mm
Revs per Mile: 792.3

So the long and the short of the situation is it just isn't going to rub... and I would consider finding a new tire guy!

235's are fine. Just don't go much wider than that on the oem wheels.

You should be very happy with them. I am very pleased with my Michelin PS A/S tires (245/45/18) this is my second year with them and they perform very well. I've never tried them in the snow though, since I prefer a winter tire for the snowy months.
