tire sizing help

so im kind of confused with sizing of tires but have a somewhat knowledge of it. So say if the tire size is like 245/35/19. I have always assumed the 245 is the gap between the rim to the beginning part of the rubber and the 35 is the thickness of the tire and 19 is the rim size. But im always wondering how the 245/35 contributes to the ride. thicker the tire softer/harder the ride?
