ok so i have a 2003.5 sedan ..
ive still got these stock wheels

17" 6 spoke (Sedan std)
Front & Rear: 17"x7" (+45mm)

so now its time to get new tires all around ...

and most likely will go with stock tires (215/55-17) all around ..

but heres my question ..

im thinking i might want wider tires in the rear ..
(why you ask ??? just to have a fatter rear tire .lol)

here im comparing stock 215/55-17 with 235/50-17



you guys have any idea if this would work??

could i go bigger in the rear ??

..or

dont even bother doing it ...????

Do it if you want. It will work fine. I threw on a set of 235/50-17's all the way around last summer.

 

I have 225/50/17 on those wheels. In fact, I never realized that it wasn't the stock specs until I read the sticker alongside the door. Anyway, the differences listed are incredibly minute to the point that their are virtually no differences. Additionally, the 225s have no issue during the alignment process or when driving around. The .23% difference in mph reading is negligible. Here are some advantages I can think of between the 235 vs. 215 tires:

215s:
1. Meets OEM specs
2. Theoretically better traction in snow
3. Higher wheel height means less of a gap between the body and tire

235s:
1. Better dry road traction
2. Since they are wider, they provide a cushion of protection against curb rash since the tire will stick out further from the wheel than 215s.
3. Look better IMO

Good choice cause aftermarket wheels f up your stock suspension. Plus most of them are heavier than the stock and kill your performance (fine line between aesthetics and performance). Go 235 all round so you can properly rotate your tires. Plus it makes sense economically.

 

Just buy new wheels, you can pick up used wheels with tires for like $1400, you're going to be spending like $600 in tires anyways.

 

Not sure i'd go any wider than a 235 on a 7" wide wheel. Typically the rule is a tire 2" wider than the rim size is the max you should really go. A 235 is 9.25" wide..which is fine.

But rules are meant to be broken, Tons of guy do the stretched tire look (not a fan personally) and other guys go for the bulge look.

I actually run 275's on a 8" wide wheel. That's almost 11" of rubber, so 3" bigger than the rim. (It's not on my G35 though)


Since i'm not getting 18's or 19's anymore, i think i'm gonna go with the 235/50/17's myself. I know the wider rubber isn't ideal for snow...but it's only 20mm. Shouldn't be a huge difference.

you'll be fine with 235, there is really no downfall in your case. You should save and buy yourself a set of rims for the summer though. It's still winter you have time.

Found a pair of M45 19" for sale on CL for $1000 the other day. I'd buy them except that I just spent $1500 on wheels and new rubber for my Mustang.

New wheels for the G will have to wait til next Xmas.

im not fully in love with .. lol ..

but not looking to get wheels right now ..

im moving to florida .. soon as things pick up ..

replacing my tires is more of a necessity .. current ones are shot ..
