Coupes w/20s READ!!

I went to my local tire/wheel shop and they were giving me grief about putting 20s on my coupe. they warned me about the possibility of such a huge wheel jacking up my abs and other electronics...is this true? Those of you who have 20s are you experiencing anything weird with Traction Control or ABS or any other electronics? Please advise.

Thanks!

That's all nonsense. As long as you go with a setup that keeps the overall wheel height within a few millimeters of the stock overall height, the car's electronics will be just fine. Guys with stock-suspended coupes seem to be having good luck with a setup somewhere around a 245/35/20 on a 8 to 9 in. rim in the front, and a 265 to 285/30/20 on a 9 to 10.5in. rim in back. I haven't heard or seen anybody having any problems at all with aftermarket wheels on a G, in regards to VDC, ABS, etc.

did you see that BS g35coupe with the blue neons underneath? He had 295's on a 19inch OZ rim in the rear.

for sure all the extra weight of a 20" rim isn't good somewhere. Not the ABS in general, but the break pads for sure. Nothing to worry about, you'll just need to replace them quicker. 20" = more weight = more rotational mass which is harder to stop.

Make sure you have the right offset too, or you'll get some really bad rubbage

do you think forged 20 are heavier than the stock 18's?

gaklid is correct, just make sure the overall diameter is the same or similar. otherwise, abs could be affected, but more importantly the speedometer and odometer would be off.

20's will be heavier than 18's even if its forged. You have to take into consideration the tires, ie. my rims weren't too heavy but when I had the tires mounted it the weight increased substantially.

Dude, I would not suggest 20" rims with this vehicle. The car manufacturer has specifically designed this for a purpose. Doing this will inhibit your performance. A credible auto body shop employee had much to say about this.

Is that employee the "Iraqi Information Minister"? The manufacturer didn't have aftermarket intakes, mufflers, cd players, metal floormats(?!), seat covers, window tint, clear bras, etc. in mind either, but people do it. Go ask your "credible auto body shop employee" about those items, too....

this is a luxury sports coupe. do you plan on taking your car to the track or something? not me. i drive it fast sometimes and i don't think 20's will hinder that at all.

Re: Coupes w/20s READ!!

When I was first test-driving the coupe a couple of months ago at my local dealer (Niello, Concord, CA) they had a laser red 6mt in the showroom with 20" chrome wheels on tires with a profile of about 25 or 30. I don't remember the width of tires. They were charging about $5800 extra for that package according to the sticker on the window. They looked really nice and were flush with the side of the car, but I could imagine it being a pretty harsh ride on such low profile tires. I wonder if they ever sold that car? Everyone had been playing with the car so much in the showroom that the battery had run out...hahaha. I was able to test drive a 5at coupe that day and a 6mt sedan, but they didn't have a 6mt coupe to drive, so I ended up buying my 6mt coupe without first test-driving it, but absolutely no regrets!
