Our position on "S-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g" is one should not! Most if not all of the information presented in this tread so far appears to be fact supported by either documentation, i.e., manufacturer's specifications, real life experience. So I am sure for those that have successfully stretched their tires without issue feel comfortable with their decision, however, as pointed out in some of the post's, the rim width range is a fixed number assigned as an international standard and as such it is recommend by all manufacturers, regulatory bodies and the D.O.T. that it be adhered to.
FYI, as a final note not to be taken lightly, deviating from the published recommendations, specifications, and/or industry standards may have an impact on the validity of your vehicles insurance in the event you are involved in an accident!

never made the statement that stretched tires were for performance, they are however used by drifters for.. drifting purposes
but I'll be the first to say that they negatively impact performance but then again at least the way I see it is, if I was so concerned about performance I would have chosen a different car

Then I have to ask "effective" in what then? Because it's sure not safety.
It's just looks at the price of safety. I understand that. But it's not really any more than that.
I think the Japan drift crowd used them as it was cheaper to use thinner tires than having to buy the wider ones all the time (guess)

mainly to fit in wheels that were not meant to fit in to be brutally honest
the tire stretching thing actually has its roots in german crowds who wanted to have a wheel setup but laws prohibited the tires from sticking past the fenders so thus tire stretching began
i don't know about the part of them being cheaper, you can always get cheaper tires that don't last as long and respond to stretch better and save money that way
