Question bad idea to powdercoat rims?

So I just bought my first G and i talked the guy down because of the condition of the rims. I have 19" rays stock and they're pretty beat up. I talked to my buddy at a metal shop and he said his powder coater might suggest that I don't use powder, but an e-coating system. Something to do with the rims being forged alloy or whatever...said it wouldn't come out nice or hold up very well. I'm calling BS as tons of people powdercoat their rims...and I highly doubt everyone is coating steel rims.

I've searched around forever and just keep getting both sides, some say it's no problem and others say don't do it. Can anyone help me please!?!? I've wasted too much time researching this.

I just got 2 of my buddy's rims powder coat from my coater. They trun out great. (Gloss black) One set was some advans and the other set was rx7 stocks. They loved them. Now which one is better. E-coating or powder coating? If you want durability I would go with powder coating its thicker and more durable. If u want a little cleaner look e-coating is the way to go. Sense you said ur rims are beat up and not in perfect condition. I would go with the powder coating it will cover and fill more of the in perfection.

You can't beat the results from having your wheels powder coated, that makes em bullet proof! Paint fades, chips and cracks....P/C is the way to go.

Cool. Thanks guys. I figured powder was the way to go but when he said e-coating I got very confused. He has his steel rims done and he said the only reason his worked are because of them being steel. He was telling me that the alloy isn't strong enough to handle the P/C process. Just going to clean them up, sand blast them, then throw Metallic Gunmetal on them. I looked at a bunch of colors and don't like the completely murdered out look, so decided on this..

Really like the way those came out, so the powder won't just fill in the imperfections, but the metallic will help hide some stuff too.

Thanks again for the input guys, trust the people on this forum more than most mechanics and google in general.

I had a set of aluminum Works powdercoated and had no problems with them. I did curb one which of course screwed up the PC in that spot, but it's to be expected.

I would strongly recommend avoiding a particular shop if they say it might not work, I'd only be comfortable taking them to a shop that was extremely comfortable doing the work. Not saying anything negative about the process, I'd just make sure it was done by someone willing and able to get the results you want.

PCing is usually very durable, but make sure the shop preps the wheels correctly. If not, there is a possibility of "chipping". I learned the hard way.
