i have 18x8.5 and 18x9.5 with the same tires dunlop m3s with 225/45/18 and 245/45/18. it works fine.

I thought the wider rear tires would help with RWD cars' handling.

a little stretch is fine.

in snow you want to use the narrowest tire you can get on there....but
factory size is fine.

wider tires work best in dry conditions.

wide tires have to push more snow aside than a narrower tire, and chances are greater of being stuck with the wide tire, while the narrow one can "slice" through the snow.

By using a narrower rim and tire combo the contact patch is decreased and therefore increases the PSI, giving better traction.

You have the same amount of weight with a smaller contact patch, therefore more traction in the snow.
