I removed it, but that is because I both wanted to keep my normal trunk space, and still have a nice audio install. So, I have my audio equipment (and my growing CarPC equipment) where the spare was. I've got fix-a-flat and towing coverage on my insurance. And I live in Hawaii, so there is really no where that is too far from help... When I transfer to a different duty station back on the mainland, I will put it in for long trips....until I get a big brake kit, and then it is mostly worthless.

Now I have a Fix a Flat cautionary tale.

One of my co workers had a can of fix a flat in the back of his Supra. On a hot summer day (85 or so) the can exploded all over the inside of his car! One heck of a mess to clean up.

This was 10+ years ago so perhaps they don't explode like this when left out in the sun like he did, or left in a hot trunk, but it definitely gives me second thoughts about having a can of this stuff in my car...

On the other hand there must be a couple million cans of this stuff left in cars so this may have just been a fluke.

Exactly.

WAIT A MINUTE! Paint has to be heavy. I wonder how much performance I would gain if I sanded my car down to bare metal?

How much does the engine and the drivetrain weigh?

That's less than 1% of vehicle weight.

Which means an average 20 mpg will go up to 20.2 mpg... you will feel as if you gain around 3hp at peak... Probably, any benefits of lighter weight on acceleration from a stop, will be offset by less traction on the rear wheels.

In other words... fairly negligible.
I don't agree with your mileage argument (power from burning gas goes in to overcoming frictional losses, drag, and accelerating the vehicle, and the ~1% savings would just be in the latter when not cruising), but I do agree with the fairly negligible part.

Though the effective gains from removing your spare are much greater than that from lightening your crank pulley, so seemingly people should be all over it (except for that pesky downside of being stuck somewhere with a flat).

The spare tire won't fit on the rear 13" stoptech kit (well, you can get it on, but it rubs), so I didn't even bother trying to fit it on the fronts. So now the spare and the jack are sitting in the corner of my garage collecting dust.

I ghost ride the G, saves about 186 lbs. My gas mileage increased from 20.2 MPG to 20.8 MPG.

I removed my spare/accessories and the backseat once just for the hell of it. Actually felt a slight difference in performance. But, everything is back in now because I couldn't stand the site of the interior.

I removed the doors, hood, trunk, bumpers, and fenders. But I left the spare in, I just don't feel safe without it in the car.

But honestly, I've been thinking of taking mine out for a spot for a system too. Good thing I have AAA.
