Tires for 05 18 sport rims...questions

Hi all,

I've done some searches already but I would like a bit more information from you experts. I am close to a deal of purchasing the 05 18 inch sports rims to replace my 17 inches on my g35x. I will need tires for the rims since the seller is only selling the rims. I live in NY and would like some good All Seasons instead of bothering with swapping tires. If this deal carries through I'll get rid of my 17's.

The stock 05 18's are 7.5 inches and comes stock with 235/45/18. Aside from the crappy Eagle RSA all seasons, I don't see anything for that size. From the searches, people have been putting on either 245/40/18 or 245/45/18. Some said it's bulging too much for a 7.5 inch rim. I want to close in some fender gap since the X cannot be lowered. Going with the 40 series are not going to close the gap but increase the gap. The difference in circumferences between a 235/45/18 and a 245/45/18 is 82.7 inches vs 83.8 inches. Does that mean going to 245/45/18 would close in 1.1 inches of gap?

Also, does anyone have pictures of 245/45/18 on these rims? How's the bulging issue for 245's on them? How's the 245's lining up with the fender?

I wish it's 8 inch rims and I would have alot more choices.

Thanks...

If you want to get rid of the gap i'd go with the 245/45 and you wont have as much of a "bulge" as some people say. I have 245/40 on the stock sport 18's and i dont notice any kind of bulge. They line up pretty well with the fender's but if you want it to be flush, get some spacers.

I will be in the same situation as you in November. I got a used set a month ago for my x. Waiting for the end of Winter before I put them on. The stock Goodyears summer tires will be all used up before winter and I will need a set of performance all-seasons. Maybe by then their will be a better selection. I have read from some that it is important to keep the same total original diameter of the wheels/tires on the x? They look pretty close the original 17".

Yes, 235/45/18 would be the same diameter as 215/55/17. The reason I will go with 245/45/18 is that it will close a little of the fender gap where 245/40/18 (would look better if lowered) but will increase the fender gap. From tirerack, seems like only a couple of affordable ultra high performance all seasons available (Avon Tech M550 A/S and Continental ContiExtremeContact) at the 245/45/18 sizes.

Exact same situation - I posted pictures on my cardomain (jerdubois) so you can see them. Also have a thread about the 18" Couple OEM on the X - with some thumbnails. They are the stock sport coupe ones, so the fronts are 225 and the rear 245. I like the look of the front better then the rear - but will probably go with 235s.

I am more then likely going to get the 235/45 Kumho's from TireRack at $117/each. They received great reviews.

Good luck!

I read that link when you posted a couple days ago. The offset of the coupe's 18 lines up better on the fender. I see that you live in MA. So you are going to run 235 Kumho Summer tires and switch out to a winter set?

Wouldn't that be a bit hassle? Plus, during winter you will be back to your old rims. I am not sure how good the Kumho's are but I don't think it's that much better than the ultra performance all seasons. This way you don't have to swap it.

It's not much of a hassle - took me 17 mins to swap out the tires last Monday - in the snow

Besides, I want a dedicated summer tire ... the RS-As blow (had them on my Audi before my Max).

Gdup35sedan, thanks for your pictures. I checked your tires, according to the manufacturer, the rim width range for your tires are 8 - 9.5 inches. I am surprised your tires fit.

Once I get the 05 sports, I'll put on 245/45/18 all seasons. Debating between Avon Tech M550 A/S or Continental ContiExtremeContact since they are affordable to me and the reviews are pretty good. What do you guys think?

Thanks...

Jerdubois,

I've driven cars many many years but I am never good at maintaining them. Now I try to do things myself (if possible) on my G. What kinda kit do you use to change your tires? Do you use a torque wrench, etc?
