Experience with 20's

For those of you guys that are roll'n on 20's, I need some advise. I'm thinking about putting 20's on my Coupe. Before I do so, I wanted to know how exactly is the ride/speed affected by 20's. I get mixed answers from any dealer I ask.

1. Will 20's give you a stiffer ride, or affect the quality of the ride?

2. How will 20's affect the speed? I've been told it slows down the acceleration, etc.

3. what are the cons of putting 20's?

Re: Experience with 20's

20's are mainly for looks, not performance.

Because you'll have a very low-profile tire with very little sidewall, the tire will not be able to absorb as much of the bumps in the road as 17's or 18's with the same diameter tire. More of that will be transmitted to the passenger compartment.. harsher ride.

As for speed, the heavier the wheel, the more rotational inertia the engine has to overcome, the slower it accelerates. Plus, with more unsprung weight, it won't handle as well. However, it's probably possible (though expensive) to buy lightweight 20's that weigh about the same as the stock 18's. Weight being equal, 20's will still be slower than 18's, because more of the weight is concentrated farther out from the center of the wheel -- part of that rotational inertia thing. Someone who remembers more of their physics classes may be able to explain it better.

It's claimed that larger wheels improve handling. Well... not really. The lower profile sidewall does flex less under hard cornering, but that's generally not enough to make up for the added weight of the larger wheels. Most of the time, people are going from standard tires to low-profile high-performance tires on larger wheels, and the tires are what make the difference in handling there. Your coupe already has high-perf tires, though.

I have 20's on mine and it's not for performance reasons. 20's are just for looks and only looks. I think 20's fit the car perfectly, but you will loose performance (acceleration). Not much but you can feel it. You will also loose ride quality but not that much either.

Remember, 20's are for looks not performance.

I may have lost a little straight-line performance, but I haven't been able to feel it. The difference might show up if I ever went to the track. Regardless, even with my heavy, flashy, bling-bling wheels, my car still handles much better on 20's over the stock 17's, despite the added weight.

So remember, only "real racers" get 18's or 19's, see that huge wheel well gap, then lower their car for a bone jarring, throw-off-the-camber-wear-out-your-tire-from-the-inside-out ride, while guy's on 20's loose a tenth in the quarter mile..(and look good doing it)

Yeah... what he said!!!! Go big or go home. Enough fast and the furious mumbo jumbo already. Oooooh, I lost .000001 sec in the quarter mile from my 20's. So what. Just add more power to the car (supercharger, nitrous, etc.) Or perhaps loose some weight to compensate. (no more fast food). Perhaps there are some real racers around here but most I assume are posers.

Re: Experience with 20's

20's are all good, 19's too small, 20's fill the gap, and rolls off your tongue so nicely..." so what size are those?"......" 20's.."
