I was wondering if anyone swapped tires from their oem wheels onto aftermarket 19" wheels in a staggered 8.5"/9.5" widths and if this would work. I check the width ranges for those tires, and they should fit, but how will it look.

In racing it is very common to test different rim widths on a particular size tire. Using a wider rim on the tire will generally increase the lateral stiffness of the tire/rim combo, which in turn increases the vehicle responiveness. You may not notice the differnece, it really depends on your skill level as a driver. Although, if you get outside the reccomended wheel widths for a tire you may be in uncharted treitory.

The 245/40 tire would be perfect for the 8.5" wide wheel.

I don't see how the 40 series tire will look any different from the side as a 35 series tire when its on a narrower tire. From the tire size calculator the side will is 3.5" for 225/40/19 compared to 3.4" for a 245/35/19. The only difference is in the contact patch width. Seeing as how you will also stretch the tire somewhat on the wider rim, the tire should appear the same from the side.

Sorry bro, but you're completely wrong. I am running a 40 series tire on my aftermarket 19's and it looks sweet.

^ no probs. they do look meaty. i'd still opt for 35 series on 19's. 40 series only if the roads are nothing but trash. basically, it's all preference. some like the 4x4 look, and some don't. some don't Not avoid bad roads/potholes and need the extra cushion for the wheels. research around in the motorsports/enthusiasts world, the amount of 40 series on an aftermarket 19 is very rare.

Yeah, the 40 series tire has terrible performance. The 245/40 series tires were the closest to stock tire height possible. They are not too meaty and they perform great. They don't look 4x4 at all. This car is my daily driver. With the 35 series tire I would be more worried about potholes and curb rash. The 40 series tires are perfect IMO.

This looks 4x4???

I think your car looks great, real clean for a sedan. I think sen_jen is maybe generalizing to all 40 series tires, but its just a ratio of the width, so a 245/40/19 is the same sidewall as a 285/35/19 which many coupe owners run in the rear, yet he says it looks meatier, when they are both 3.9" tall. The only difference is when you look at it from behind.
