Ecu Resets

Since GSM posted this on the other forum and may get feedback there, I thought I'd just sumarize (plagiarize) and post it here:

G35 ECU Reset #1

1) Turn ignition to on only, (don't start) wait 3 seconds
2) Push fully and release the gas pedal 5 times within 5 seconds
3) Wait 7 secs, fully push gas pedal and hold for 10 seconds until the CES light starts to blink
4) Release gas pedal (you are in diagnostic test mode 2)
5) Press and hold gas pedal for more than 10 seconds. Release pedal.
6) The CES light will continue to blink
7) Turn ignition off. Restart car.

Re: Easy ECU Reset

As posted on the Tech Forum, another possible method:
ECU reset #2

Hi all - this is my first post.

I've found (I think) a way to quickly reset the ECU and restore "aggressive" transmission performance, without pulling the battery or losing the radio settings:

1. Pull both fuses marked "ENG CONT/INJ" (there is a 15A under the hood, in the fusebox near the battery, and a 10A in the driver-side interior fusebox - pull both).

2. Wait 3 min, crank the engine briefly (it won't start), wait another 3 min.

3. Put both fuses back in.

That's it - it will now start, the ECU seems to have been reset to the "default" agressive transmission setting (hooray!), and the radio presets have not been lost.

It may be that only one fuse matters, or that cranking doesn't matter, or that just a moment of disconnection is enough - I haven't had time to try these yet.

So far I've only tried this once (as described, on my 2003.0 G35 Sedan - automatic) and it worked for me. I'm about to go on vacation for a couple of weeks, but maybe someone else can experiment and find out these things.

When I get back I'll play some more - eventually I hope to install a simple reset button off the fusebox, or set it up so it resets automatically every time the ignition goes off.

Re: Easy ECU Reset

As taken Off the TechnoSquare Site for the 350z, should work for us too.

350Z ECU Resetting Procedures

Please read all instructions and be familiar with them before any attempts.
A stop watch or an analog clock with a second’s needle will be useful.

ECU Resetting Procedures

Timing is extremely critical. If it is NOT DONE within the specify time, the ECU will not reset and the Check Engine Light (CEL) will continue to remain ON.
A stop watch or an analog clock with a second’s needle will be useful.

Operations Procedures for Basic reset.
with M/T depress clutch and hold it in.
1. Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch “ON” (don't start) and wait 3 seconds.
2. Repeat the following steps (2a and 2b) procedures quickly five times within 5 seconds.
2a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal (HARD).
2b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
3. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 10 seconds until the CEL starts blinking.
4. Fully release the accelerator pedal (while the CEL is still blinking)
5. Wait about 10 second.
6. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for more than 10 seconds.
7. Fully release the accelerator pedal (The CEL light will continue to blink).
8. Turn ignition switch to “OFF” position and now you can start the car. The CEL light should be gone.

If the CEL light continues to remain ON, repeat the above steps. Timing is EXTREMELY critical to resetting the ECU.

Accelerator Pedal Release Position Learning

Operation Procedure
with M/T, depress clutch and hold in.
1. Make sure that the accelerator pedal is fully released.
2. Turn ignition switch “ON” and wait at least 2 seconds.
3. Turn ignition switch “OFF” wait at least 10 seconds.
4. Turn ignition switch “ON” and wait at least 2 seconds.
5. Turn ignition switch “OFF” wait at least 10 seconds.

Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning

Operation Procedures
with M/T, fully depress clutch and hold in
1. Make sure that accelerator pedal is fully released.
2. Turn ignition switch is “ON”.
3. Turn ignition switch is “OFF” wait at least 10 seconds.
Make sure that the throttle valve moves during above 10 seconds by confirming the operating sound.

Idle Air Volume Learning (Throttle Position Learning)
It is better to count the time accurately with a clock.

Operation Procedures
1. Perform “Accelerator Pedal Released Position Learning”.
2. Perform “Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning”.
3. Start engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.
4. Turn ignition switch “OFF” and wait at least 10 seconds.
with M/T, fully depress clutch, and hold in
5. Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch “ON” and wait 3 seconds.
6. Repeat the following (steps 7a, 7b) procedures quickly five times within 5 seconds.
7a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal (HARD)
7b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
8. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 20 seconds until the Check Engine Light (CEL) stops blinking and turned ON.
9. Fully release the accelerator pedal within 3 seconds after the CEL is ON.
10. Start engine and let it idle.
11. Wait 20 seconds.
12. Rev up the engine two or three times and make sure the idle speed and ignition timing are within the specifications.

Re: Easy ECU Reset

Another quick method that seems to work and has also been done by Audi and VW owners for several years. The Nissan / Infiniti techs both locally and on this forum have confirmed the effectiveness of this reset:

Remove the Negative and then the Positive wires from your battery terminals. Touch the wires together for 5 to 10 seconds. Re-attach (Positive first, then Negative), and during your next drive for 10 to 15 minutes or so, drive the car aggressively ("like Andretti") to have the ECU re-learn the information. Please do this safely!!!

With some cars, including Audi and VW, owners report that the car may run and idle rough, until the new curves are learned.

Re: Easy ECU Reset

An added caution from KPierson:

From: KPierson

I was browsing the forums today for info on ECU resetting when I came across the post:

Although this method will completely drain the ECU of any stored power I think it is important that you add a small warning for any G owners who have aftermarket amplifiers installed. Touching your power and ground leads together can be disastrous if you have a large amplifier installed or any kind of stiffening capacitor. Most large car audio amps have descent sized capacitors on the power supply side to help stabilize the voltage going into them and you will essentially be shorting these caps out, which can potentially destroy them or, worse, create enough of a spike on the ground side of the electrical system to fry every component attached to ground. Not to mention the shear shock of the person who touches the two leads together as quite a spark will be created!

A big thanks for the caution, Kevin!
