Rear Deck Lid

I have a question which may have been addressed somewhere in the 500+ threads on the G35 Sedan, but I haven't been able to find it.

I have a 2003 G35 Sedan, in excellent condition with only 45,000 miles on the odometer. But for some time the rear deck lid barely opens when I release it from inside the car or with the remote. It unlocks fine, but barely pops open enough to get my fingers between the lid and the bumper to lift it open.

I'd be happy to replace the struts if that would solve the problem, but I don't want to do it and still have the problem. Maybe there is some other adjustment which needs to be made.

Any thoughts?

Tom

That is how it was designed - it only pops open a bit for you to get a couple of fingers under.

45k on an 03... wow. Did it just sit around in a garage for 10 years?

Nope, it was driven almost every day. But only for short trips. It has always been a "2nd car" so it just didn't build up many miles.

Too bad that the deck lid was designed that way, because it's a PITA in my opinion. By the way, "getting a couple of fingers under" the edge is almost an exaggeration. It's more like "a couple of fingernails".

Lube anything that moves back their with a dry lubricant, and open and close the trunk a few times.

Good luck, if still problems, check the spring in the latch.

I have lubed every moving part, and checked that the spring seems to have plenty of force. Interestingly, if I lower the lid gently until it is resting on the latch, there is plenty of room for 2 fingers between the lid and bumper. But if I latch the lid, and then release it, I'm back to 2 fingernails.

Everything seems to move freely, and I don't see any way to adjust the spring (although it seems very firm as it is). Maybe I just have to live with the tight fit. I seem to remember it popping up higher when the car was new.

If your trunk lid stays open replacing the struts w/b a waste of time and $$! There must be some adjustment either the latch on the lid or inside the trunk. You could roll into a body shop and slip one of the employees a $20 asking him if he knows of a way to adjust the latch...

I did find a service bulletin which dealt with adjusting the bumpers on the deck lid (to solve a different problem), and that seemed to help a bit. I assume there is a possible trade off of creating a bigger finger gap and causing a misalignment with the deck lid. So far that doesn't seem to have created a problem, so maybe I'll keep extending them to see if it improves the gap issue.
