satellite antenna question

satellite antenna question
I've seen some people complaining about the antenna flowing with the car and plus most, if not all of them, are black. I was wondering if the antennas from the M35's and what-nots are compatible with the sirius tuners for those of us that have non-black cars. I'm sure they are but can someone confirm this? I like the look of a color-matched shark fin as opposed to a black tad pole on my roof. unless the antennas are 6,000 dollars at the dealership.

Rear dash reception will depend on 1) where in the contry you are, 2) obstacles, and 3) if you're around terrestrial repeaters.
I live on the FAR east coast, ant tried it on the rear deck. I would only get reception when heading in som directions, or when near terrestrial repeaters (found in citys, you can actualy mount it in your trunk and get reception from a repeater).
Rock and Roll (soon to be one more), the XM satalites, are VERY low in the sky for us up here, so the signal is eaily blocked by stationary obstacles or parts of the car...
XM and Sirius antennas are not compadible, but an XM antena is an XM antena is an XM antena. They do have 2-plug and 1-plug antenas, but there are adapters. Sirius has alwyas used the same 1-plug setup.
So if you dont like your big factory one, you can switch to a new smaller one.. I have a 1"x1" that I ran through the trunk up the driver's side rear-window weather striping, and the antena is on that back corner of the car, very subtle

I have Sirius- the antenna I use is called a SIGMA (Sirius Interior Glass Mount Antenna). You can get it from Grubbs for $70 (a little expensive but you won't have an ugly antenna on the outside of the car). It attaches to the top of the front windshield on the inside with super sticky double sided tape- once it is on it is on and super hard to get off. You can't see it from the outside. The wire is run down one of the A-pillars (easy to do). It works fantastic- never get dropouts. It's a little big on the inside but mine is mounted just to the right of the mirror and I don't even know it is there.

Just found out from the dealer that the antennas from the m35 are compatible. The antennas have to be run through the roof (drilling) and a seperate cover which has to be painted. Depending on the money situation, I will have it done and post pics. The more I think about it, the more I think the fin will look good on the car.

I noticed when you put the antenna on the dash, it doesn't work well. The antenna is magnetic, and works best when attached to large metal objects.
I have driven around with it on my roof and my dash and noticed that it works 10 times better on the roof.
Here's my XM micro installed on the roof. I barely noticed it compared to the large ugly factory antenna.
I have never had one droped signal. With it on my dash it would drop all the time.

Small antennas are small they don't necessarily work better....
Some people paint the antenna, and it looks more like it belongs.
I have had mine on the rear deck for over a year now and I have had no reception problems in the city or in rural areas. I did put a metal plate under it. I actually live in an area that has no terrestrial signal in range. People who have problems on the rear deck tend to have metallically tinted windows. The way around this is to retint the back window with ceramic or pure plastic film or you can retint just the section above the antenna.

This is why sometimes the rear deck does not work as well. But the rear deck seems to work better with the larger Infiniti antenna (2 wire).
But if you are mounting on the roof, go for the small one IMO, it should work as well as any. At least this has been my experience.
