Cool place for DVD player in Sedan
Cool place for DVD player in Sedan
I plan on installing a small (3/4 DIN) Icon DVD player in the rear center armrest compartment of my sedan. My measurements say this should fit. Has anyone tried this yet?

heh heh so much for the first aid kit.

That's velcroed to the side of the trunk. It was either stop the car when the kids want a different DVD, (and mount the player in the trunk), or stop the car anytime someone injurs themselves inside the car. DUH!!!

nice job. are your screens in the headrests?

Thanks. I have not yet installed them, but I have a pair of Accelevision 5" monitors, (the only ones I could find with a downward tilt feature to work with the slope of the G headrest.) I also plan on a visor mount for the front passenger. I'm thinking about a Power Acoustic PT-589MSV for that. I also have a Pioneer CD-VS33 and a 400w power converter. This will allow individual selection between DVD and PS2 for each of the three screens. More pics will follow soon.

Thanks, I installed it myself. It was a very easy job (no more than 30 minutes):
Removed armrest from car.
Removed plastic pocket.
Cut off bottom 2/3rds of plastic pocket.
Unhooked leather at back of armrest.
Snaked wires through armrest.
Remove two front feet from DVD player.
Plug in all wires to DVD player.
Install DVD player. Push it in as far as it will go.
Push remains of plastic pocket in around DVD player.
Re-attach leather at back of armrest.
Run wires under back seat towards side.
Re-install armrest.
I got the DVD player from carstereoexpo.com. $138.74 including shipping.

Re: Cool place for DVD player in Sedan
RacerX,
Very nicely done! So you are running it to the .avelectronic unit? BTW, how do you like it. Picture quality? Also sound quality? Are you running it via Fm modulator? I remember reading someone posting, that they are feeding the sound via a tape adapter. Running the wires behind the HU. Will running the sound via a tape adapter give you better sound quality than FM mod. Ofcourse not even close to having RCA inputs, but hey what can we do. I have seriously been considering getting the .avelectronic unit, but I am a bit concern about the sound quality. I am an audio freak. I wish could change the HU and still have my navi work.
Anyway, any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

No. At this point, I don't intend to run it into my factory Nav unit. I'll have three monitor, one on each rear seat headrest, and on on the passenger sunvisor. The A/V switching will be handled by the Pioneer CD-VS33, with the switchbox in place of the rear ashtray.

I havn't powered it up yet, but Icon is a very well known brand.

I plan to use an FM modulator just for occasional kicks, but for the most part, this install is for my kids, and they will be using headphones almost exclusively. I really don't want any distractions other than radio/CD and Nav when I'm driving, and especially not some "Mary Kate and Ashley" drivel. I can't shed any light on what's the best audiophile way to tap into the HU, I just don't have any experience there.
Up to now, I've been using a DVD laptop to placate my little kids on long trips, and it's wonderfull. This install will give them improved viewing, added flexibility (DVD and PS2) and the convenience of a permanant install instead of a jerry-rigged set up.
