SAT Radio, Grubbs, and XM ??

Alright, so last night I went and bought an antenna to hook up my sat radio, but forgot one vital thing.... the actual XM modulator.. now my question is this. Everyone is buying their stuff from grubbs.. now is that just the XM commander they advertise on their website, or is it a special infinti part, that i *have* to go through an infinti dealer to get my sat radio to work? (meaning i can't just go buy XM commander and it comes able to be plugged into that white harness)...

Re: SAT Radio, Grubbs, and XM ??

You probably want the special Infiniti unit. It plugs directly into the radio, and does not use an FM modulator. The FM modulator version will probably work, but the sound quality will be less (FM radio quality instead of digital quality).

The big question is.. is your car already prewired? Some cars (such as mine) have the Sat button on the radio, but don't have the wiring to actually connect the Sat unit.

Re: SAT Radio, Grubbs, and XM ??

ahh ok, that's exactly what i was wondering. Yeah mine came pre-wired, so I knew I could get it. I just didn't know if I had to get the infiniti one or if all infiniti were selling was XM commander (150 .. + 50 for the low pro antenna .. and I still come out a 100 less than grubbs).

Re: SAT Radio, Grubbs, and XM ??

Grubbs does have the OEM sat radios for XM and Sirius. They're $299. That includes an antenna. (The thing about the Terk antenna is an upgrade option.)

Re: SAT Radio, Grubbs, and XM ??

yo all here is an update. I went to infinti yesterday to get a confirmation on what I thought was correct. I went down and asked the dealer if all they were selling for 299 was the XM Commander with an antenna and then u plug that into the wiring harness, and he said that was correct. I asked him how in the world he could charge 299 for just XM Commander when it's 150, and an antenna is only 50. Then i finished my own thought, "B/c we can't buy XM Commander yet.... it's not out." He said, "Correct." So pretty much if I want it right now before XM commander really hits the market, I have to buy it for infinti, but if I am patient I can get it for ~100 less. I'm still debating on which one to do.

Just thought I'd share the information in case anyone else was wondering the same thing.

Re: SAT Radio, Grubbs, and XM ??

shade, I don't know what your dealer is telling you but the xmcommander is not the unit that you connect to your pre-wired harness. it will only work with the fm modulator or with an auxilliary input (currently not available as an aftermarket add on for the g35). if you want to use your integrated sat button and the display on your head unit, as well as a direct wired connection through your factory stereo you will need to get the Infiniti OEM XM Satellite Radio Kit. this will easily plug in to your wire harness, then it just needs to be mounted and grounded. lastly you'll need to place your antenna and run the wires. i placed my on the rear cargo shelf and get excellent reception. the xm commander is a totally different solution.

Re: SAT Radio, Grubbs, and XM ??

Here's a funny one for you. I asked my dealer how much it would be to add the Sat. radio to my car (I need the wire harness as well). They quoted me $900.00! Can you believe that crap? That's a $550 installation. I laughed at them.

Re: SAT Radio, Grubbs, and XM ??

That is just not right, although I got the same quote from the dealership in Austin...and mine is already prewired. I asked them how much they wanted just for the XM kit...$450! They told me they had to sell their parts above MSRP or they would go out of business. What a bunch of crap. I called Grubbs in Euless and they only wanted $299.

Nice car by the way...do you work at Anadarko? Have not ever seen your car in the parking lot but I am over in Waterway.

Re: SAT Radio, Grubbs, and XM ??

It's the wiring harness that jacks it up. My dealership said they can wire my car for Sat (not including the sat itself, just fix the pre-wire problem) for $600. What a priviledge.. to pay $600 so they can fix their mistake. I think I'll wait for an aftermarket AUX adapter.

Re: SAT Radio, Grubbs, and XM ??

Do we have to use the XM service with our preinstall harness / SAT button? Or can we use Sirius. I have heard that Sirius is better (less commercials)

anyone w/ Sirius or have an XM v Sirius comment?

thx - T

Re: SAT Radio, Grubbs, and XM ??

There is an Infiniti XM and an Infiniti Sirius radio option. Either box plugs into the pre-wire harness.

Re: SAT Radio, Grubbs, and XM ??

Sirius does have less...less commercials but also less variety, and lesser music sound quality, less subscribers. xm has 30 commercial free channels and the ones with commercials are infrequent in my opinion. and with 101 channels to jump between i never really need to listen to a commercial anyway. check out patrick norton's review of both xm and sirius at http://www.bmbcc.com/xmsiriustechtv.mp4
. you may also want to check out www.xmfan.com .
and, yes you can get either a sirius or xm reciever and either will work. good luck.
