SAT Radio
I was just quoted $660 for SAT radio at dealer. I saw the OEM kit on Grubbs for about $300. $360 for labor is just crazy. Is it difficult to install the kit myself?

Re: SAT Radio
if you're prewired it's super easy. i installed mine in less than an hour and it would have been even quicker but my prewired cable came up short and i had to come up with alternate placement. it takes no technical skill other than a screwdriver to do this on your own. and the dealers should be ashamed of themselves for price gouging as much as they do. my dealer wanted to charge me $425 plus $200 for labor. did it all myself for $300. grubbs is the way to go.

Re: SAT Radio
I just got my tuner and quasi-installed it. I don't fully agree with the above poster. For starters you need a socket driver to get the left trunk cover off in order to get to the harness, so the "just a screwdriver" bit is patently false.
One big issue is that there isn't a designated place for the tuner, it looks from the documentation that they want you to velcro-stick it somewhere, and there isn't a great surface to do that on (unless, perhaps you remove all of the trunk trim?), especially with the short amount of cable the factory harness has on it. For Sedan owners this may be easier as it comes with an L-bracket and specific screw mounts. Does anyone have any tips on how you're actually supposed to mount this thing in a Coupe?
I just ran my antenna to the rear deck and it seems to work great there. I went cruising around town and didn't have any reception problems or drop outs (Except on a street that a friend's roof-mounted sirius tuner also drops out on)
The bizzare thing though is that I installed my Sirius tuner and I'm pulling in various stations but I haven't activated it! Does the tuner give a trial period or something?

Re: SAT Radio
pardon me. you will need a wrench or socket driver of sorts. i failed to mention it because my coupe had the necessary tool sitting in the tire well as a way to gain access. and i assumed this would be obvious. as far as where to mount the receiver...do you have the instructions? they note a specific location for both the coupe and the sedan. if not send me you email address and i will email them to you. lastly, i don't know about sirius, but with xm you get about 4 stations before activation, but will not get all 101 until you activate.

Re: SAT Radio
I was joking about the tools...
I have the instructions (from Grubbs) but I don't see the big flat surface they show in the drawing and I don't really undestand what they want us to do with the velcro strip. The factory pre-wire harness doesn't reach very far anyway. I think I need the same "alternate placement" you mentioned. Grubbs is definitely the way to go though, I cannot see paying $600+ for professional installation of this.
Placing the antenna on the rear deck does work great. I drove the car through mountains without any trouble. I get minor drop-outs when going under bridges but a friend's car with a roof-mounted antenna wasn't much bettter.

Re: SAT Radio
yeah, i get great reception with the antenna on the rear cargo shelf as well. i placed my xm receiver to the left of the amp. it's been 6 months but i think i had to unbolt the amp to slide it out of the way to slip the receiver in this location but it only took a couple minutes and then it fit back in the same spot. i used the large industrial adhesive pad to stick the receiver down in this location. no probs so far.
