Re: capacitors

Yes, wire them in parallel. Positive to positive and negative to negative.

Re: capacitors

I'd like to add that hooking them in parallel will give you a total capacitance of the two of them added together (ie. 1F in parallel with 1F = 2F. Unlike speakers, when you hook them in parallel, the resistance is halved (assuming both impedences are the same.)

Re: capacitors

GoSooners is correct. There is no negative to adding more capacitors in this scenario unless you count money and space.

Re: capacitors

Why not just get a yellow top and a battery isolator?

Re: capacitors

I don't know a lot about caps but I'm pretty sure a better battery won't do what a cap does. A cap stores power so your amp can draw from it for the big bass notes. A stock alternator can't supply these sudden and frequent power surges so your headlights usually dim or your amp clips. So where does the battery come in to play (I'm learning too).

Re: capacitors

A cap will do nothing for your typical bass notes. They don't have enough reserve to discharge any power throughout a typical bass note. In fact it will probably put more of a drain on your system than not having one. The cap will discharge it's power in a fraction of a typical bass note. Once discharged, it will look to recharge during the same bass note further burdening your electrical system.

I wouldn't waste your money on caps.

Re: capacitors

Unless you're an audio junkie like me and use caps to improve transient response, caps won't do much. al503 is right, they don't do much for power reserves for bass. If you really need extra power reserve, you're going to have to go with a 2nd battery and/or higher amp alternator.
But yea, the only thing a cap does somewhat effectively is improve your transient response of your subwoofers because it releases its charge faster than your battery, and so your bass "reacts" faster.

Re: capacitors

Also, if your amp has a regulated power supply, a cap is useless.

Re: capacitors

besides doughster's suggestions of getting another batt or an upgraded/rewound alternator, you might consider upgrading the magic 3. This consists of either upgrading the power wires from the engine to chassis, chassis to -battery, and alternator to +battery. The stock power wire is 8 gauge wire. You could either add additional wire or just change it out with 4 gauge or lower. I am willing to bet that this would do as much or more than a cap would.

Finally, make sure that the amp grounds are bare metal with absolutely no paint, dust, etc. A clean ground does wonders.

Re: capacitors

If you want a longer reserve (engine off play time) get another battery... If your lights are dimming, get a higher output alternator... All of the rest of these suggestions are a waste of money and time...
