GPS Install / Cubby Removal
One thing you can do is get a spare 12V accessory sleeve from Napa or Pep Boys. They cost like $5 and they prevent you from having to solder the lead wires from the cig lighter directly to your Garmin adapter. Instead, they come with lead wires you splice onto the cig lighter wires and then you just plug in the Garmin adapter into it. Then hide it behind (under the stereo) and you're set.
I'm not 100% sure now, but I'm pretty sure I stripped some insulation back and soldered wires directly onto the bare metal. You can also just use wire tappers (available at hardware stores or electronic stores). You'll connect it to the leads on the accessory sleeve, and then clamp down on the wires on the cigarette lighter.
One thing to watch out for is to tie your new wires down with enough slack so that the door retracts properly. First time, I didn't leave enough slack and the door opened very slowly.
EDIT
So I never disconnected any of the stock wiring, I just spliced into the original wiring. I still wanted to be able to use the OEM 12V socket.
