One bad battery and you are off something forever? Wow.....
Yeah, i am, it was a brand new battery, in the box, purchased for full price and dead right out of the box. Measured like 7 volts. So what i'm supposed to leave my car sitting in my garage for another week while they send me another that might also be dead? I needed my car to run THEN after I paid like $150 for the thing, took out the old one and put in the new one....that was supposed to work because it was BRAND NEW.

Did you ask why?
yeah, i did and they gave me some sorry "we just don't have the time to test every battery before it leaves here" answer....they never made an offer to expedite a replacement to me or anything like that, in fact, they half acted like i was being unreasonable because i expected their brand new battery to actually have a usable charge on it when it got to me.

Did you return it?
uhh, yeah i did and it was a huge PITA, since it had allready been installed in my car, then i had to chase them down to do the UPS pickup on it for like a week.
Did the shop that sold it to you make good on it?
no, not really, i never got a voluntary refund from them, i had to dispute it with my c/c company after i returned it.....and i never saw a cent for having to pull out my old one, put the Optima in, take it back out, re-install the old one, get my car started, limp over to the dealership, and get an Oem one put in. All because they are too busy to take 5 seconds and put a meter on their battery before they send it.

what out of business? the OP asked for opinions and got them.....if optima does not like what happened with the brand new dead battery i was sent they should take steps to prevent it. I'm not going to sit here and pretend that didn't happen when it did.

Do you think the OP should only get told about good experiences people had with optima's just cause you like yours?

You're right. It's just that I have used Optima batteries for the last 10-12 years without one single problem. I had problems with running my battery down with my Ham radio gear when I forgot to turn it off. Never happened with the Optimas.

that's a nice DIY write up...only thing i might add is to check the voltage on the new battery with a meter before you install it (optima or any brand). Just because it's new doesn't mean it has a good charge and a simple check can save you alot of time and frustration. I should have thought to check mine before i put it in, now i know.

Good point thanks for the tip. I would have never though of that with a new battery. You know, it might be that because we use a weird style (reverse terminals) that our batteries sit on the shelf for a long time before being used.

Warmer temperatures promote faster corrosion and evaporation of electrolyte, which is probably the cause of most premature battery failures. The typical life of a battery in Arizona may be 3-4 years, mid latitudes something like 4-5 years, and cold climates 5-6 years. These are just rules of thumb, but they haven't really changed for decades for batteries whose electrolyte levels are maintained.
