new audio plans=grreeaat

i heard my friend's audio set up in his Type R the other day and it was awwweesome. so, i decided thats what im going to have as well. btw, hes going into competitions. He's running:
-Focal Polykev's, the old ones cuase the tweeters are better
-2 Arc Audio Amps powering the speakers
-1000 watt amp for sub...forgot the exact brand, but he was using Arc's before and they kicked ***.
-1 fat *** image dynamics subwoofer(only a 12 i think, but this thing kicked sooo much *** i cant believe it) = good thing i have a sedan..the box needed to hold this thing was about 2'x1.5'x1.5'
amazing system. lucky guy got everything for cost.

So you're going to get all this stuff since it sounded great in your friends ride? Most of it is system tunning, not just components.

Re: new audio plans=grreeaat

Well, if he likes the sound, there's no reason not to go with those parts, right?

Your'e right though, system tuning ... and car acoustics play a big part in the result. My very first system was a Pioneer 10" in a well designed bandpass box with a cheezy 200w max amp (remember, high school budget here) that sounded great in a 79' Mustang Hatchback. Even the installers at the stereo shop were just amazed at how great my pile of crappy parts sounded.

The same box and amp were nearly inaudible when I got a new 92 Civic. It took 3 times the power and two Kicker 12"s in a ported enclosure to get near the loudness that I had before, and it just never really sounded as good. I'm really happy that the G coupe doesn't have the "trunk bass" problems that my last Mustang and Civic had.

So, moral, don't expect the same parts to sound the same when you go from one car to the next.

Re: new audio plans=grreeaat

I had a phoenix gold ti 500.4 running my focal utopia. it was great but when the amp went south on me. bkchang79 let me use his arc audio. I was amazed and was sold on that arc audio. I got the xxk 4150. The biggest difference i noticed was the warmth coming from the arc audio. It wasn't harsh like the phoenix gold ti. The focal tweeter is very detail and having a harsh amp can really make a difference.

Arc audio amps (with the exception of their kar line) are competition grade amps, and have always been one of my favorites along with brax and helix and such. The designer of arc audio amps also made zapco amps, which are famous for their quality too.

Anyway, that image dynamics woofer you heard was probably the IDMAX 12, which is one of the best performing woofers out there. It held the crown until the w7 showed up, but the idmax costs substantially less and so that has been my choice for my car. Plus, i became friends with one of the tech supports at ID, and get alot of help from him. The good thing is, the idmax can go freeair too and sounds very good like that, so if enclosures are a problem, just mount it to a baffle board and turn it up.

By the way, a lot of the sound quality depends on the install. Sure, you can buy good stuff and stick them in whatever location, but a good install will make it sound that much better.

Re: new audio plans=grreeaat

all you guys say is true, but my idea in getting the same stuff is this: why buy something I have never heard before, when I have heard this, and it sounds good. if it doesnt, i can always try other stuff. hopefully this will work well. and yes its the IDMAX 12. did the w7 really beat out the IDMAX? ive seen the w7 encousures, and they are large, but not as large as the IDMAX boxes. maybe the w7 is the way to go...

Re: new audio plans=grreeaat

yea the w7 barely beat out the IDMAX in sound quality. Linear excursion is essentially the same. And by the way, the enclosure sizes of both subs are basically the same, with the w7 having a recommended sealed enclosure of 1.25 cf while the IDMAX has a rec enclosure of 1.3 cf. IDMAX can also go free-air and can be had in both dual 4 and dual 2 ohms. W7's are dual 3 ohms.
