Eh guys... didn't want to necro post and the only one I could find on the subject was almost 2 years old.

In our last meet one of the guys was describing how he took the rear speakers out and left in the grill so that he could get full effect from subs installed in his truck. It looked sweet and clean.

As said in the old post... this required removal of everything because they're screwed in from the top. VERY inconvenient.

Anyone found a more creative way of bypassing this that doesn't require the removal of the sides, seat and panel?

Yeah, I would definitely like to know if someones found an easier solution too as I plan on doing the same in the near future.

When I had mine apart, I didn't see any way easier to take out the rear speakers. It's really not that hard to pull out the rear shelf.

 

The only way I know is to remove the interior panels to allow removal of the deck cover with the speaker grills. Sucks but that is the only option really save using a sawzaw and going at it from below. However there are benefits to having to do this and that is sound dampening. When you remove the passenger panels there is an access panel that opens to a huge cavity that you can stuff some couch foam or equivalent into to quiten the ride. Another thing is access to the rear deck itself which after adding subs tends to be a source of rattles. The deck covering vibrates off the rear metal deck plate. Put some foam between the deck and cover to deaden those, I added deadening material to the deck itself in addition to that as well. The interior trim can be a pain to get off, be gentle but firm as to not damage it. Didnt have to many issues going back together and the increased quiteness was worth the extra effort.

I just spent a good part of the day putting two amps and changing all 4 of the rear speakers in my 04 Coupe. If you have any questions just yell. As far as an easier way to remove the rears, that would be a no. Even if you backed the screws out from the bottom the rear deck doesnt have the room to get them out and the only way to remove the rear deck is to take the whole back end apart.

 

Is there some trick to getting the rear interior panels off to get to the speakers? I have my interior stripped down to that point, but I'm leery of using a lot of force to get them off. Do you pull towards the middle of the car or is there some direction to pull first?

 

^ By interior apart I am assuming at least the rear seats out, both bottom and back. The tricky part is the area where the trim pieces go together at the passenger windows in an inverted \___/ shape. You need to first remove the bottom panel. There are dovetail type connections for the two panels and they are a pain to get apart. First start by removing the door weather strip and pulling the panel away from the car at the side and bottom to free the panel except for where it connetcs to the top panel. Once it's free, basically you need to push towards the window and at an upwards angle away from the opposing top trim peice to get off. It isnt easy, be firm but not overly rough with it, it will eventually give and you can get ot off. Once you get it off you can better see how it clips together and next time it won't be quite so hard. Hope that helps.

 

which part, everything pretty much pops straight out and if you take your time you really cant screw it up.

 

Got it apart, only toasted one of the little white clips (so far). Kind of surprised how they mounted the speakers. And the lack of any real sound insulation back there to keep out road/wind noise.
