Success anyone??

Has anyone actually used their 6.4 firmware cd to update another G? I believe the firmware cd is coded to your vin# so if you were to use it on another car it would fail. I think this is their copy protection method since the map dvds are easy to copy on a dual layer disk.

that would suck! if that's the case, i'll probably wait a couple more months and just get the next update in a few months...

The firmware CD is just that, a CD. It's not coded with a vin#. Works fine on any G. I know.

7.x isn't compatible with 6.x systems. You are only capable of using 6.x software with your Nav system.

6.4 Update

A nice update to all of you. I've successfully backed my my own copy of 6.4 dvd without any glitches. It is even easier than before. All you need is 3 things:

1. Clone CD whatever the latest version is, trial version works fine.
2. Decent dual layer dvd drive, i used Pioneer A09XL, latest firmware
3. Original Verbatim Dual Layer (8.5GB) disks. Do not attempt to use other brands. It will not work. Memorex, Ritek, and other crap does not work. So do not waste your money.

A. Use CloneCD to make a complete DVD image to the folder on your hard drive.
B. Burn from image to your D/L disk at the slowest speed possible. 1x or 2x.

Good Luck!

P.S. Do not ask me in this forum, or PM me about selling dvd copies. If you have 6.4 disk than you can make a backup copy yourself. If you do not own 6.4, then buy it from Zenrin.

I've made several copies using different media and software. Here are the successes and failures, just for reference.

I've successfully made images of the original Map DVD ROM with UltraISO and CloneCD. Either one will work fine.

I've written the images to DVD +R DL media with CloneCD and ImgBurn with high success rates. I agree with Animalz. The success rate with Verbatim DVD +R DL media is very high (88%, 1 coaster out of 8 tries). I created a number of coasters using Fuji and Memorex media (60% +/-). Stick with Verbatim.

One thing to remember is to set the booktype to DVD ROM. Not all dual layer burners allow you to do this. If yours can't then you may have some compatibility issues as most DVD's with the standard DVD +R book type won't read properly in the Nav system. Hope this helps. PM me if you have any questions. Happy to help.

Has anyone been able to successfully copy and use the firmware CD? Or use an original firmware cd to update a different car?
Zenrin is going to have a sale starting tomorrow April 1. I was told the 6.4 will be $40 off so $150. I might just bite the bullet and buy it. I haven't been able to get answers in this thread regarding the ability to copy and use the disks on a different car. I understand that the map DVD can be copied onto a blank dual layer disk but what about the firmware cd? The map DVD is useless without the firmware upgrade correct?

6mtsedan,
I have successfully copied and used the firmware CD. The firmware CD is very easy to copy as it's just a standard CD ROM. It can be used in ANY car as well. Almost any CD copying software can do the job. The map DVD ROM is the difficult part. It is correct that the newer map DVD won't work unless you also have the firmware upgrade CD. You will need both disks to use the newer version. The firmware upgrade is done first and then you pop in the map DVD and you're good to go. Hope this helps.

this is going to be a very dumb question, but if you buy the new version 6.4 from Zenrin, will they also give you the firmware cd, or do you have to buy that separate? I ask because I knew nothing about this firmware cd until recently, but was thinking about buying 6.4 from zenrin, especially if they are having that sale mentioned above. Thanks in advance.

The firmware CD does come with the purchase of 6.4 from Zenrin.
