Sorry for my comment earlier, I am have been a fan of Home AV, not so much into car AV. Just got a G recently, so looking for speaker upgrade ideas. I just thought that JL is always known for their SQ.

Don't be sorry. In my experience JL speakers are excellent subwoofers in many areas including sound quality. I'm actually partial to 10" subwoofers and intend on using a 4080 box with a 10w3v2 or 10w6v2 depending on if I upgrade the other speakers as well.

JL Audio subwoofers are definitely good. You can't go wrong recommending them. They're just a little pricey. IMO you can do better for less money.

What should I look into other than JLs? Does anyone know of any dealers in the So Cal area (preferably in the 626 or 714 area code) that actually demo different higher SQ subs and speakers? Most places that I have seen do not have any of the higher end stuff hooked up.

Here is what I am doing:

1 600W 4-channel amp

Replacing front components with DA661's
Putting 12in sub in trunk and cutting power to the rear deck speakers and rear fill speakers.

I plan on bridging two channels for the sub and using the other two for the front components.

Now, given this setup do I still go for the 4ohm?

I've been happily installing Alpine Type Rs in several cars recently. 2 12" in an expedition. 2 12" in an accord. I've got a test box in my trunk right now (05 sedan) with a single 12" type r. This sub has absolutely blown me away as the best bang for the buck. JL w3 doesn't even come close. I'd put this up close to W6 level in terms of SQ and response. The new 05 Type R design is far superior to the previous 1241D model.

The expedition had 2 w3s before and when I told my customer that the alpine type rs will hit better and sound cleaner than the JLs he had he wouldn't believe me. I told him I guarantee you'll like them that much better. Needless to say he's another satisfied customer. For the money... $130 isn't a bad price for a nice sounding sub. I'm really like the Type R compared with my solobaric 12".

As I've said twice before Image Dynamics IDQ12. I can't compare it to the Alpine Type R since I've never heard that one but the ID is an awesome SQ subwoofer. I've got an IDQ10 waiting to go into my G.
