I hope you dont mind if I add a few pics to this thread, I just got my 4th $105 'no plates' ticket, I swear the meter maids know where I live & come look for my car >.>
Finally got around to putting my front license plate on....

I tried to replicate this binder clip method, it worked really well! It feels quite sturdy... Ill use it everyday. If it falls off Ill update this post and let you know

I used a piece of felt between the bracket & the bummer as the OP suggested, and I used 2 large binder clips (medium was too small for this generic bracket), 2 screws, & some 3M double sided tape just in case the 2 screws ever got loose (unlikely) from the bracket. The tape wasn't really necessary since it didn't affect the adhesion of the bracket to the bumper, just the plate to the bracket itself. The 2 screws do NOT go into the bumper.

$.50 for 2 binder clips
$7 for generic plastic license plate bracket, included 2 screws
$5 3M double-sided tape (you dont need this)
$15 knockoff metal Infintini license plate frame from Ebay (you dont need this either)

so $7.50 will cover it if you go bare bones.

#3 used the felt piece behind everything, and it was actually kinda tricky to get both clips on, due to the clip arms and such, had to make a few attempts. Once the clip is on though, you can remove the little arms entirely so that the plate attaches more flush to the bracket


#4 pic of the 3M Indoor/Outdoor double-sided tape I used


#5 I only used the tape because I dont totally trust that the 2 screws will stay in the bracket forever. The tape has nothing to do with the adhesion of the bracket to the car. Ready to add the plate & frame.


#6 all done, screwed the outer license plate frame into the plastic bracket witht 2 screws-- the 2 screws do NOT go into the bumper.

The #10-32 screw is too small for my J-Nut. It slips right through. Did the screw size change since the 2003 model? Anyone else find the proper short screw for this method?

Edit: a #12-24 1/2" screw works good enough for my 2003, although #12-32 would probably be perfect.. too bad OSH didn't have them.

OP thanks for this, but please make sure to note that for the screw size, your mileage may vary...it didnt work for me...i have an 06 coupe

The following worked for me:

Did NOT reverse the J-Nut (silver piece)
Bought Machine Screw M6-1.0 X 12MM

Worked great like this for me, took me a while to find the right size, good luck everyone

Just an update.....

I took my car again in Oct. 2011 for inspection, so I put the plate assembly back on as described in my original post.

I put on a foam backed tape on the inside of the plate holder assembly where it made contact with the bumper, and went thru inspection no problem.

Since then, I have not had a moment to take off the plate assembly, and I can tell you after approx. 1,500 miles this plate is going nowhere. It stays in place, and does not move at all.

So as a follow up.....this is a fool proof way of attaching your front plate with out the need to make holes........and you always can go back to plateless in a flash.....Good luck!

 

I'm pushing 3.5 years on mine with this so I'd say... ~30-40k miles? Hasn't budged at all, even with the way I have to park in my garage (hitting a closet at the end of the garage with my front plate each time to ensure that the door doesn't ding my rear bumper when it closes).

I just did this to my car...worked like a charm! I also used the large binder clips and it's holding tightly. The mount isn't budging. I also added all-weather Velcro (just in case) and used all four screws. I'm not happy with the way it looks (with the plate in the front) but it sure beats paying a ton of $$$ for a Stillen mount...or $167 for the ticket I received! Thanks again for this post!!!
