DIY blacked-out grille w/ pics
sanding really depends on how **** you are about the finish project... some experienced sanders could take 30mins and have it looking great, others take 3 hours and it can still come out looking like crap... there isn't an exact time limit... just do a good job, take your time and make sure it comes out SMOOOTH... time is in direct relation to skill...
IMO, i would never spend 5 hours sanding any part of my car... considering 1 trip on a 65+ mph road, and you've already got rock chips...
Damn, I sanded all the paint off and hit black platic a few times....didn't turn out as I wanted because the clearcoat came out uneven....giving it 2 days to dry because it's pretty humid down here...
Honestly man, i think your spending way to much time on it... i know you want it to come out perfect, but taking extra long doesn't mean its gonna be any better... When it comes down to sanding, all you wanna do is make the grille smooth and sand out imperfections.. sanding it doesn't mean to take the paint off of it... cause your just gonna cover it up anyway... I took 10-15 mins sanding till it was nice and smooth, cleaned it.. light 1st coat with black, then the 2nd and 3rd coats were moderate, dont do heavy..., and lastly i put two coats of moderate clear coat, let it dry till it was dry to the touch, and put it back on... took about 2 hours max... im not bagging on your technique.. just letting you know its ok to do it within a few hours... esp since like i said.. rock chips are gonna eat away at that grillie before getting chips from doing a bad paint job... and most of us repaint the grilles twice a year.. since its so cheap and easy to do...
