uneven pad wear toasted my rotors

2004 G35 Coupe 6MT w/ Brembos.

I had a local mechanic friend of mine replace my stock pads with some Hawk HPS pads and about a week later I noticed that I was getting EXCESSIVE brake dust on the front passenger side wheel.

I took the car in and the inside pad was at 4mm and the outside pad was at 9mm. The rotor was pretty tore up too, so now I definitely need to replace the rotors as well. All other corners of the car looked normal. The dealer initially told me that the mechanic must not have cleaned and lubed the calipers which is something that they always do when they perform a brake job. I relayed this information to my mechanic and he said the guy didnt make any sense because the Brembo caliper is a monoblock design and there are no slides to clean and lubricate. So he called the dealer service advisor and it turns out the service advisor came from a GM background and didn't know this. He asked me to bring the car back in for more tests.

The dealer has their shop foreman and mechanic look at the car and drive it and they still say that nothing is wrong with the caliper. They say that the caliper would either work all the time or not work at all... so they refuse to fix this under warranty.

Does anyone here have any similar experiences or any other ideas as to what may have caused this? I am going to have my mechanic order another set of pads and rotors and we will get those installed and see what happens.

Hope this all makes sense.

Thanks in advance for any advice...

Izzy

going off of your description the only other thing it could be would be a sticking caliper. you've described a classic symptom bro

i experienced something similar to that, but before i did by pads... my back right inside bad was TOASTed, while the outside one was at like 75%... it's a luck of the draw...

i installed my pads with HPS's too... did them myself and all i could think of while reading this is that your mechanic might not have installed them correctly, but i do not think that that is the case... do you know if he replaced the brake fluid after? if he did not break the car in correctly, the inside piston may have locked out and got stuck and constantly kept pressure on the inside pad which would def cause major damage

i know that we did not bed the pads in properly. i will make sure to do it this time around for sure.. i just hope that it isn't a problem with the caliper and then i'll have to get ANOTHER set of rotors & pads.

if it is the caliper, go back to your stealership and raise hell... it would clearly be a defect if you went through them that fast and they were installed and bedded properly

It is a well known fact that inside pads wear faster than outside pads on floating calipers due to trapped heat and reduced force [calipers bend/shift slightly] lowering force on outside pads by 5-10%.

Real lux o sports have an electronic pad wear sensor on the inside pads [like my 90 Q] and other brands.

Entry level vehicles skip these expensive sensors.

Failure to clean and regrease slider pins at frequent interval make the problem worse.

Ok, I have an '04 6mt with brembos, and I just noticed my rear, passanger, inside brake pad is almost all gone when all other pads still have at lease 35% left. I almost bought new rear pads, but figured I'll research this on this site in case this could be addressed by my dealer. Did anyone have this corrected by the dealer? Any information or advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Ok, called the dealer. They want me to make an appointment so they can look at it. Once he realized I have Brembos, he said he's not sure he can get the pads under warranty, and to get there before I hit 36k miles.
I'll make an appointment for next week.

Non-Brembo calipers = yes. You are right.

But the oem brembo packages in the G coupes feature 4 piston fixed type calipers. There should be equal force on both pads.

True fixed calipers do distribute the piston forces more evenly to inside and outside pads.

Use thermocouples to measure the inside vs outside pad heat............obviously inside wear means something unusual is going on.

Check the inside pistons for heat damage to seals.

Sounds like an improper install. New pads should ALWAYS be bedded in.
