NEW BRAKE ROTORS ALREADY!

I went to my dealership to get my third tranny put in (but thats a whole 'nother issue) and they said I would need a brake job at( i had 12,000 miles on it) and so I said okay...then when i picked it up they said i would need new rotors for my next brake job and that it would come out to something like $1500+ for that brake job since the rotors re soo pricey. my question is that are these rotors only supposed to last 24k or so?? He say that is because the brembo rotors are soo thin or someshit. Whatever the case may be I have never owned a sports car (unless you count my mustang gt convertible 4 yrs ago) that needed this much upkeep. I cant justify spending $1500 at 24,000 for a f***in brake job. That is ludicris...Has anyone else came across this with a cheaper or more feasible alternative? or is there a place to get cheaper brake rotors and pads? I went to the brembo website and even on there the rotors for our 6mts are $439p/pair or something..and all the other cars on there are like $219p/pair.....Please any help on this would be much appreciated, Thanks in advance.

Re: NEW BRAKE ROTORS ALREADY!

with brembos not much else you can do. What you see at websites like http://www.i-m-racing.com/brakes.html is basically what you will pay everywhere. Its even more ludacris to drive with worn brakes, esp when you know about them bc you are too cheap to buy new ones. Basically you pay to play. I'm sure you could trade out your brembos for the stock brakes to some other G35, 350Z driver.

Re: NEW BRAKE ROTORS ALREADY!

I can't imagine you needing new rotors after only 24k miles unless you let your brake pads die out and rub metal to metal on the rotors. None the less, if you do, just buy some aftermarket rotors, pads and do the job yourself. It's very easy and will save you lots of $$$ plus you'll have sweet new rotors to boot. Changing your own pads and rotors on all four corners is probably a 3 hour job at most. I just changed my my front pads a couple of weeks ago. I had never done a brake job before but it was so easy thanks to a tutorial floating around on here by Malx. Now that I've done it, I could probably change my pads in an hour!

Re: NEW BRAKE ROTORS ALREADY!

I just had my 30K mile service done on my 6MT. I also had the brakes serviced. I had new Hawk HPS pads put on all around and had the rotors turned. The service advisor didn't have any problem turning them. I should be good for another 30K miles.

Re: NEW BRAKE ROTORS ALREADY!

I don't have the Brembo's so I can't really say for sure. But I received a notice from Infiniti about them taking care of brake problems to 36,000 mi due to excessive wear because of there high performance braking system. It didn't mention anything about labor but from what I got out of it they will cover the parts. Check with your dealer. I've got a question on your tranny problem. I've been complaining from day one that I didn't think mine is right. I get this very hard down shift into 1st when I'm in manual. I also don't think it upshifts like it should either, seems mushey, like slipping. I've driven Pinto's that shifted better. They say everything is normal because there are so many variables in these tranny's, fluid temp, driving conditions, sensors, valves, relays, me, etc. The tranny is not trash or anything, I just think for this kind of money it should be a lot better. In brief what condition are you experiencing? Steve

Re: NEW BRAKE ROTORS ALREADY!

My G35c 6MT is nearly new, but I wondered enough about the brakes after reading the commentary to look into it a bit.

I thought I'd heard that you can get the Brembo's "trademark" 2-piece floating rotors (drilled or grooved by Brembo no less) in a replacement size for the one piece rotors that Nissan puts on (that might account for the difference in the Brembo prices you saw, if the G35 versions are 2-piece and the others one).

Brembo claims the 2-piece Brembo rotors that come on their Gran Turismo kits are supposed to be almost impossible to warp (any experience out there with this?), and even slight warpage is the biggest determinant of how much material is removed during a turning (which in turn determines how long the rotors last).

It also seems unlikely that your rear brake rotors would need replacing too since the fronts do most of the work.

Re: NEW BRAKE ROTORS ALREADY!

NO str8dum i got the brake job done at 12k when the dealer told me it was necesasary. SO im not riding on worn brakes.,He was saying that my next brake job around 24k i would need new rotors! NOT NOW! and thats whats LUDICROUS...What im saying is that a brake job that requires two new front rotors at 24k is horrible..i dont even use the brakes that often..I mainly downshift! But about those part numbers for the brembos slotted rotors...if anyone has those that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If it were me, I definitely wouldn't be going back to the dealer, I'd be looking around for a shop to do it, and use a better wearing pad/rotor, I will only use the dealer as long as the 36/36 warranty is in effect, then I will change over to something else!!

Re: NEW BRAKE ROTORS ALREADY!

I'm sorry to say I was wrong about the two-piece and you're definitely right about those sets being more expensive than some of their other applications.

I asked why these were more than most other sets. FWIW, their explanation was 1) they are only for the 6speed G35 and so the production numbers are small (the rears are different, but I would have thought the fronts would fit the track version 350Z), 2) they're cheaper and made with a lighter and tougher alloy that's closer to steel than cast iron (if you hit the Nissans with a hammer they'd shatter, the Brembo's would dent), and of course the choice of drilled or slotted (and they're said to have the best machining/metallurgical technology for that sort of thing).

I think you've got the stock part numbers, but if not, they're FD00097 for the front drilled pair, FS00097 for the front slotted ones. RD00057 for the rear drilled, RS00057 for the rear slotted. I sent a PM about price.

I just had my dealer replace the front brake pads and rotors for free at 30,000 miles. I don't have brembos, but I thought that brakes and rotors were covered on the G's for 36,000 miles.
