Braking Data

Has anyone actually seen data on stopping distances of the stock brakes versus the various BBK kits out there?... The only thing I have seen were theoretical claims?

Looks are one thing, but spending $6k+ on a top of the line set of front & rear brakes with no data to back it up has been so unsettling for me.

I used upgraded rotors (slotted & drilled) and pads (ceramic) and noticed almost no difference from stock (worse actually if anything).

Those who have installed the BBK kits, do you notice a significant difference in braking distance or mainly just the look?

any data available on the kits? (Brembo, AP Racing, Rotora, StopTech, etc)

Here is some data from Stoptech, who actually do testing to optimize their kits

yeah, that was my main worry...

the stoptech brakes vs. the factory brakes yields an improvement of 0.65 feet of stopping distance from 60mph.

summary: $5390 + install
gain: car stops 7.8 INCHES shorter from 60 (negligible)

BBK's aren't for improving single stop braking performance, their primary objective is better heat dissipation resulting in decreased brake fade in track conditions. There is a misconception that BBK's substantially improve braking performance. They don't. Almost all new cars are limited by tire adhesion and not brake torque.

Hey Thanks for the heads up RedLude97 ... that was my fear... that you spend all that money only for aesthetics (if you aren't intending to track run the car).

Many times aftermarket kits may be equal or WORSE than very good oem in single or even multiple 60-80 mph stopping, because factory spends so much to come out high in magazine tests.

Pretty simple to see that longer wearing less dusty aftermarket pads have worse peak friction than oem pads at least until 450-550F gets exceeded.

Very dusty pads gain in the first 1/2 second of a panic stop where speed is highest.

Important to measure rotor rise in a single and multiple panic stop. from 60 mph rotor [pads] do usually increase by more than 150F so if the ambient is ~ 32-100F ..............180-250F is hardly warm. If you add 150 to 250F you are still not HOT 400F and may have enough for a 3rd stop before 550F.[+-]

Oem tests with 2 back to back [no cooldown time] panic stops from 60-70 mph.

The best way to get better braking distance is get a sticky set of tires and an aggressive set of brake pads. Big brake kits have more mass and can absorb more heat to prevent fading.

Tires are often overlooked with regards to stopping distances.
