Forum Newbie Advice: Ripped Off or Just Right?

Longtime lurker here. Great forum guys...

I've got a 2004 G35 sedan sport w/ 125k mi. Infiniti tells me it's time for new shocks/struts and rear sway bar leans (sic), as well as the full alignment that comes along with doing all of this. They also looked and said my steering coupler was shot.

$1384 for shocks/struts/sway bar leans
$70 alignment
$188 steering coupler

All of these prices include labor. How badly ripped did Infiniti just get me for? I know that for this kind of money, I could jump into a new G through the Winter Sales Event, but I'm attached to this one. Don't want to give her up yet.

Did you already have the work done? If not, get a second opinion. If so, find a good independent mechanic and you will probably get better prices for future work. There is really no reason to take any car to a dealership for non warranty work, as their labor and parts costs tend to be high.

I haven't pulled the trigger yet, no. Well aware that going to Infiniti proper will always be more expensive, but I'm strange in thinking that since they see nothing but G's all day, that they just might be doing better work (and are more knowledgeable about the product). I know, it's pie-in-the-sky thinking. Just being honest about my mindset.

I'll shop it for now. Just for the record, wtf are sway bar leans and a steering coupler?

For shocks and the steering coupler, any mechanic will be able to replace those with the same skill as an Infiniti mechanic.

Some shops are better at alignment than the Infiniti techs. e.g. shop that only does alignments.

A steering coupling reduces the rotational force felt by a driver should the wheels impact an obstacle. The coupling is particularly suited for vehicles comprising simple, single-unit steering assemblies. The coupling permits a certain amount of slippage between the wheels and the steering wheel without a total loss of steering. The driver may set a threshold torque at which slippage occurs, thereby controlling the “feel” of the steering. The coupling includes a friction disc that permits rotational movement between two housings in the steering assembly.

For that price on struts and springs u could get a nice set of bc coils... And bc coils are sexy!
Or u can get some f and f and still have cash left over.

Those must be some magical shocks and struts for that kind of money! Shop around and like the previous post said, any good mechanic can do all this work.
