Brake Job Quote - opinions pls

Driver side rear caliper seized and burnt up the rear pads. I finally have an excuse to dump the rusted slotted/drilled junk installed by the prior owner. Scope of work: front/rear rotors, front/rear pads and hardware, 2 rear calipers, 2 rear hoses. All OEM parts. Mechanic wants to charge me for 5.6 hours of labor @90 per hour. A complete brake fluid flush is included in this price. Does 5.6 hours seem excessive to anyone? The total out the door price including tax is $1827. I think its worth mentioning I am a regular customer at this shop. I already spent $4500 in the past 10 months but it seems like the guy is not cutting me any slack. What do you guys think? Thanks.

That's far too much, I would charge $120 in labor for that.

If you have any mechanical experience, a basic wrench set and some will, you can do this work yourself.

I'm trying to get an opinion on what is considered a reasonable amount of shop time for the labor required to do the job I described. My concern is that this is really a 3 hour job at best, and the extra 2.6 hours is total bull. Its not only about the money, but the principle. Anyone know how many hours the dealer would try and bill for?

im not sure about the amount of hours you would be billed for, but you could just give a call to your local dealership and they can give you a price quote to replace all of those parts, labor, hours, etc over the phone, then there is no guess work.....

The dealer's going to be more expensive than your mechanic, that I can assure you. I would estimate 3 hours max. and that would be with me taking my time.

blue dream thanks, thats what I've been thinkin. 3-4 hours max. 5.6 hours labor plus whatever profit he make from $1200 worth of parts is too much for a simple brake job.

Our techs usually charge 1.6-1.8 to change pads and turn the rotors for just the front or rear. so for new rotors/pads/calipers/hoses/flush it really isn't that bad as far as labor goes...parts on the other hand might be a little high. Send me a PM i can get you some OEM parts for a good price.

Just did fronts and only took me about an hour even with some stubborn bolts. I'm sure a shop with the proper tools could do it much quicker.
