Dilemma: manual or auto
Used to 5AT, now I 6MT
I drove 2005 5AT for a year. Rarely ever left MM. But when it was destroyed, I replaced it with a 6MT. I had no idea what I was missing. I used to justify it by saying that "MM is almost the same.", "why would I want a clutch, when I can just flick my wrist?", "the MT has so many problems.", but now that I replaced it with a 6MT, I am happier with my car than I have ever been. Speaking objectively, the 5AT has its place in the G35 coupe as a "sporty" car. The 6MT turns the G35 Coupe from a "sporty" car into a sports car. My favorite things about the 6MT over the 5AT are chirping tires shifting from 1-2-3. Even better is the quarter mile run I do every time I get on the highway. The sound of the engine at 6400 RPM when I jam down the clutch, the engine jumps up a couple hundred RPM and then dump it and the back end dips down and I'm pressed into the seat. WOW!!! 6MT is the way to drive this car if 1. You drive differently near a cop. 2. Your passengers brace themselves when the light turns green or you have a bald spot on your passenger side floor mat from the passenger brake. 3. Wish you were on a track. 4. Hate feeling neutered or explaining to people why you didn't get the 6MT. I am not casting hate or sympathy on the 5AT or its drivers. But from a former 5AT advocate...I prefer the 6MT.

You don't sound rude, just ignorant!

(oops, now sorry if I sound rude
)- it really is a matter of preference I suppose.... the AT is more luxury, the MT more sporty (IMO). That direct link drivetrain feeling is missing on the AT (it's smooth, not jarring). That said, I've seen AT times to be very close to MT times at the track, so while the MT might "feel" sporty, it's not that much faster (not enough to make up for driver inconsistencies with the MT anyway).
It is harder to "chirp" tires with the AT no question, especially with the stock TC and VB. The shifts are just not "hard/quick" enough and the TC "absorbs" engine RPMs. That said, I can chirp, spin, etc using a brake torque launch though it usually results in poorer times.
Just test drive both and get what feels better to you.
And if you want to be able to chirp those tires, definitely get a MT. I could chirp my tires all day in my 132 hp Saturn...

This topic has been argued several times before on these forums...do a search and you will find countless threads on it. In the end, like PWStudent said, It depends on what YOU are going to use the car for. For me, this is my daily driver and I get stuck in a lot of traffic all the time, so I went with the auto. If I had to do it again I probably would've gotten the manual instead, since lately I've been getting into autocrossing and the car is starting to be more of a project car.
Pick what YOU want, and don't let the ignorant "autos are for girls" comments make you choose. People like that need to grow up.
BTW, I wouldn't listen to someone who can't even spell INFINITI right.

[QUOTE=rcdash]I disagree. Once you learn manumatic, you have full control of rpms. No, you can't shift from 5th to 1st. If that's the type of control you're talking about! So the auto is safer - harder to blow your engine! (For those of you who really have no clue how manumatic works: you push up, you go up a gear; you push down, then you go down a gear; you do nothing then you WILL STAY in the selected gear, bouncing off the rev limiter if you want to; you double click down, you go down two gears).
It takes weeks/months to learn the manumatic mode (coming from a manual) - you guys are all talking out of your @ss if you haven't actually practiced racing a 5AT in manumatic mode.
It's all a matter of opinion I suppose...
I drive the manumatic whenever I bring my car in for service and I got the feeling that the pulling sensation when accelerating is not as defined in the manumatic as it is with the stick. Hard to explain but it ain't the real thing.

I have only owned 2 automatics in my life, and those are the only two I plan on ever owning for years to come, untill I am about 65 or so, and rather than enjoying every second of driving, use it to get from point A to point B. Right now, I blast through gears, smoke tires, love chirpping between gears. never go from A to B in a direct line (exept to work). The only downside I can ever really think of having a manual is when your trying to get road head. LOL

I agree but you might also want to add satelite radio to this list.
no one in my family drives stick - i was the first to get a stickshift - i can be proof that it can be learned - you'l be driving wihtout a problem in a week, no stalling within a month.
i definately suggest 6mt, although ive never driven an Automatic G

You would be surprised that me, being a month from my 18th birthday (driving the car for around 2 years now), get more people commenting not on the car that i drive, but the fact that its an automatic. I do regret not getting a manual, and am actually thinking about trading *up* so to speak. It all boils down to a matter of preference, and I love driving the car now, in auto...I cant imagine how fun it would be to drive stick.
