How much are other things, like a value meal at McDonald's?
what's that.?

Other than gas, I think you should find things slightly less expensive after the exchange.

Have we decided on any specifics yet for the Quebec trip? I'd like to start researching some possible hotels, but am not really sure what part of Quebec City everyone is interested in staying at. I was thinking somewhere in old Quebec City myself. Also, it looks like we will be there for July 1st weekend, correct? If so, things will probably book up quicker, so we may need to book everything a fair amount of time in advance. Let me know what your thoughts are.

You're right it will be a busy weekend. I also think its a good idea to start considering our specific plans in QC. As far as going around Gaspe we've got a better chance of just winging it or booking as we travel.

I'm very happy to have our travelling moderator do some research and make some suggestions.

How much are other things, like a value meal at McDonald's? I'm just trying to get a sense of the economy scale in Canada as compared to USA. $1 USA may get me $1.18 CAN, but that doesn't mean it has the same buying power.

For instance, I know that in Norway, everything costs 2-3x as much as it does here, because their economy is on a much higher scale. Minimum wage in Norway is about $15 US dollars/hour, yet it costs them $15 for a value meal at McDonald's. So it's all relative to them, but it costs American tourists a pretty penny to visit. I still recommend Norway though!

Just wondering if you guys can give me some other frame of reference for the value of the US $ in Canada.

The best currency conversion site I know of is www.oanda.com, it's been around for many years and is quite reliable.
If you're from Boston odds are the cost of good in Canada won't seem too high with the exchange rate. We do have higher taxes on purchases, which may be a little shocking at first but for the most part the prices are inline with a large American city; maybe a bit cheaper for some things like dinners out.

Yep, that what I was thinking Deane.........booking our nights in QC and wing it for the Gaspe Peninsula. How many nights are you and Heather thinking of for QC?

I certainly don't mind doing the research as I rather enjoy it.

That sounds good Shane.

I was looking this over (below) for distances around the Gaspe. I would like to plan to break up the trip to QC so we get there earlier in the day. That means driving part way on day 1 staying overnight somewhere and hopefully leaving less distance on day two arriving in QC with a bit of daytime there. In that case two nights in QC should work. We can spend a couple of days on the Gaspe as required. We'll likely swing off around Campbellton and head east from there.

Let us know what you want to do going up. I'm thinking we will make the obligatory stop in Bathurst on the way home so we can stay without disrupting the Gaspe trip. I would also like to hear some more input from others on what they want in order to satisfy as many as we can.

Quebec City along the coastline around the Gaspe Peninsula to Gaspe Qc = 709 km (441 mi).
From Gaspe Qc along the rest of the coast to Robinsonville NB = 339 km (210 mi).
Robinsonville Qc to Degelis Qc to Riviere du Loup to Quebec City = 491 km (305 mi).
Quebec City to Kincardine =1,016 km (631 mi).

Total Trip = 3,571 km (2,219 mi)

This was a rough calculation to determine the distances. I can hardly wait .

That sounds good Deane. Anissa and I would would love to travel together with you and Heather. We would have no problems at all driving part of the way the first day and staying somewhere in between. Like you, we would be looking at staying 2-3 nights in QC. Anissa has never been there (and I haven't been there in quite a few years) so I want to make sure we have a few days to explore the city. We could then take another 2-3 days to tour the Gaspe Peninsula. Since I will be on Paternity leave, I'll have all the time in the world.

Just looking at hotel prices in old Quebec City, it looks like $150+ is the norm for that time of year. The hotel below looks nice and seems to be centrally located in old QC. It would be nice to stay in a hotel that is within walking distance to the Frontenac, shopping, and some nice dining.

Good work Shane. That all sounds great with us. I like the look of that hotel and the location sounds fantastic. That price range is satisfactory to us. Secure parking is probably worth the $13/night.
