Arrow Weird *woooo* type sound when car is cold

This sound never happens in the summer when the entire car is nice and warm all the time, it only seems to happen once the weather starts to get colder, or in the winter.

I start the car after it's been sitting for awhile and start driving, and around 2000-3000RPM the car makes a pretty loud weird *woooo* type sound. If I stay at a constant speed between these RPMs it makes the sound, if I let off the gas then it goes away. It never seems to fully go away until about 10minutes into a drive when the car is fully warmed up.

I first thought that maybe the thermostat was causing something before the car warmed up, but I noticed that even if the temp gauge shows the car as being warmed up, it doesn't go away until I drive more. This made me think that maybe it's something in the transmission? I have no idea to be honest.

Has anyone else experienced this or know what it might be?

Check the air intake tube...maybe the connection is not tight around the throttle body.

Have you checked the exhaust system for any leaks? How is your gas mileage?

I have the same thing. At first I thought it was air comming in from a small crack/leak. But then I started to suspect the diff, I'm gonna change the fluids in it to see if it is infact Dif howl.

Does the sound change frequency at all? My car does this too when it's cold but never in the summer. I tried to look it up on here and as far as I remember, it's not a problem.

It doesn't change frequency, it's pretty much the same all the time. I changed all my fluids last week, transmission, differential, coolant, and that didn't make it any worse or better.

Here's some other threads on the noise:

https://g35driver.com/forums/brakes-...6mt-coupe.html

https://g35driver.com/forums/drivetr...en-cold-4.html

https://g35driver.com/forums/g35-sed...-howl-6mt.html

It seems like no one's come up with a solid answer on what is causing the noise. Some say they had their transmission replaced and then the sound went away. Some say they had it changed, the sound went away, but now they hear it again a little but it's not very loud. Some people say it's something in the diff., something about a differential pumpkin, so who knows.

Apparently it's not caused by air going over something and making a noise, because one guy put his car on jack stands and went through the gears, and it only does it around a certain speed, so it's something mechanical.

Someone also said something about a cabin air inlet that stays closed and only opens when the car is warmed up, but even when my car is fully warmed up and I drive it, it still makes the sound until I drive around for like 10 minutes. This makes me think that it's something in the transmission, differential, or something like that which only goes away once I drive around and heat up those components.

My transmission (6mt) makes stupid amounts of noise when its cold. Its rediculous. Its mostly bearing noise, which concerns me as this car only has 48k on it. The tranny also grinds into 2nd and 3rd, all the time. Not so bad when you hold the clutch in for longer, but you still feel gears doing things they arent supposed to do through the shifter. But the noise is only prominent when the car is moving, theres a little noise at idle, but its very noticable when one gets moving.

Worrying isnt it. What else is going to go wrong with the car in the next 50k, when its off powertrain warranty.

Sounds like something in your transmission is jacked. Go check that out at the dealer asap if it's still under warranty.

Totally different problem than what I'm experiencing though.

I had the same issue in my '04 6mt. Stealer was never able to effectively diagnose and correct it. From looking through and posting in several of those threads it seems inconclusive with no one 100% on resolving the exact same issue.

I traded the car and have made contact with the new owner giving them disclosure and all of my documents over the past 5 years.

G/L fixing it. I would love to know what the problem is.

I also have different noises from my 04 6mt, mine makes kind of a sqeeky noise and I think its coming from a pulley. Once the car gets warm its gone. Most lubricated parts don't function properly when the cold weather hits untill they have a chance to warm up its normal.

Huckersideways it sounds like you have a syncro problem with your tranny, if it is start looking for a used or rebuilt tranny cause the dealer will soak you in labour alone.

Apparently this sound is normal as I took it to three shops for diagnostics... Basically I was told I paid full price for the noise. Just comes with the car.

No need to worry!!!!

^yep, that's the exact sound mine had, although mine was much louder with a cold start and cold outdoor temps. The sound went away after 5 minutes or 3-4kms of driving, although I didn't run the car in the winter. Not sure if it would have been worse in the winter or not.

There are lots of theories on the issue but no one has been able to diagnose or correct it to my knowledge.

I had OE exhaust.
