You always hear reference to the total medal count,
which I always thought strange.
IMO, if the idea is to strive for excellence, there should be a weighted point assignment for gold(3), silver(2), bronze(1).
& YES!!!!!
Superb day for Canada.
The 1-2 in women's bobsleigh was fantastic

The convention used by the IOC is to sort by the number of gold medals the athletes from a country have earned. In the event of a tie in the number of gold medals, the number of silver medals is taken into consideration, and then the number of bronze medals. If two countries have an equal number of gold, silver, and bronze medals, they are ordered in the table alphabetically by their IOC country code.

It's a little confusing to people, and for good reason. IOC uses the number of gold medals, North America uses the total medal count, and the UK and Australia uses a point system like you mentioned above. Unfortunately it seems there isn't a universal system being used worldwide.

As a matter of fact it would be there, but it wouldn't fit. I had to exercise some creative license to fit the character limit (in addition to other liberties I may have taken). In a week to two I might be able to put it in when the numbers are less ...umm ... character-full.
