04 G Carpc Worklog

Well after buying another car and dealing with stock navi (and more importantly without a carpc) for a month or so the time has come for me to dive back into putting one in. I had an 2001 GTI with the a carpc that suited me very well.

http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/work...og-begins.html

Moving forward here is a pic of my new ride..

The plan is to pull out the navi stock screen and the dvd rom and install the carpc in the upper cubby hole. I'm planning on purchasing the g35 housing from here. I plan to sell the Navi system and dvd system for $800 so if you're interested or know anyone that is let me know. I upgraded the maps disc to 2008 so hopefully I can offset some of the costs. I'm open to offers too.

As far as the hardware goes I'll probably everything from the previous install and put it in the new one. I looked into getting one of the newer Intel board because I have an extra core2dup laying around but figured I'd just stick with the Jetway board for now.

I guess my biggest issues will be location of the pc and installation of the g35 housing. I've read a lot of different places that the housing is made specifically for non navi versions of the radio cage so I guess I'd need to see what's different. Has anyone pulled out their screen and went with the housing? I've seen a lot of double din installs but hadn't seen anyone that has replaced the navi with this housing.

Down the road I will look into replacing the speakers and getting my sub put in. The 4080 boxes look pretty cool but I figure I need to get this done first.

Here's a quick run thru of parts w/ links for anyone that's interested.

Hard drive - seagate automotive grade hard drive

Keyboard - ps3 thumbpad http://www.amazon.com/Playstation-3-...4125075&sr=8-3

Memory - 1gb ddr2

OS - Windows XP

Front End - Centrafuse

I'll go with pac's unit to get audio thru the cars auxiliary port and I'll probably get the steering wheel control unit as well.

I'll post up pics once I get started with the install and any and all feedback is always welcome. Thanks

Just a quick update..

I have just about all the parts ready to install but hit a bump in the road with my monitor. Apparently I got an older version of the 700tsv that doesn't have the auto power on feature and auto switch feature for reverse camera purposes. So I'm going to pick up a new screen and see if I can scrap the old one.

Finally found a monitor that should be here this weekend! I'm hoping to start the install process this weekend if everything goes as planned.

This is the specific model that fits into custom made housing. The newer model monitors don't fit the housing for whatever reason so I had a bit of a time trying to track one down.

yea ive looked at that one before. decent screen. just dont forget that you can take the covers off the screens to reduce their size. Like the plastic housing. You dont really need any of the buttons on the monitor other than maybe some small changes at first use if even needed at all. So without the housing and the buttons it will reduce its overall size by a lot. good luck man keep us updated. Ill soon be starting on mine once i get a bit more free time.

Just a quick update.. I got the navigation taken out and touchscreen put in. I plan to put the actual pc in next weekend as long as I can get everything mounted correctly in the compartment on my test bench. Here are a few pics of everything. Oh and I found a few video links that were a HUGE help.

Yeah it comes out manually but I like it because it can be concealed. Yesterday it took me about 6 hours by myself to take everything out and get things swapped out. I ran into some hiccups and got snagged on some stuff so that's why it took so long. I ended up forgetting to re-connect a ribbon so I had no radio/ac so I re-did that today and took everything back apart and it only took 30 mins. Once you get comfortable with it it's a pretty quick process.

looks like we are neck and neck but I'm on vacation next and will be on a cruise so you may have me beat. I've already installed my screen into the the JDM DD, tapped my ignition and wired my Kenwood amp so all that is left is to actually install the pc. I'll mold it into the screen later on like I did in my last G (last pic)
