The tire stuff is tricky. Tires really have to be clean and dry. Use one of those sponge applicators. Sometimes you have to apply it twice - go around it once and wait for it to dry. Then apply a second coat.

In my experience, I doubt that statement to be true - but then its your car and you can do things however you like. I would be more concerned with the QUALITY of the towel messing up the finish, instead of the COLOR. Just my .02

Not just any towel! A 100% USA COTTON, MADE-IN-THE-USA towel. Get it right and you'll know. When wet, they are extremely soft. Compare them with Persian or Egyptian cotton, or towels made outside of the USA, and you can feel the difference between good and bad. Proper towel choice is essential. Only debris getting stuck in the cloth will pose any threat.
I found mine at Bed, Bath & Beyond. They're Wamsutta Premium or something (they aren't cheap). Watch out, as their top-of-the-line Wamsutta towel is a Persian Cotton line, and that would F your finish up!
Look at the tags and to find out for sure. After a bit of looking, it's easy to feel the difference by hand.
