Light scratch but 3M no work..

Light scratch but 3M no work..
Looked like some fool leaned on the front fender of my car
waiting for someone and swayed back and forth putting in several scrathes about 8 inches wide, very noticeable.
Run my finger over them, don't feel a thing, I am a Zaino convert but thought I would go right to the 3M product, swirl
remover for dark cars but it did not do a thing, its a black car
just wondering if I should take it one step higher with another
product, would not like to make it worse of course or let the dealer look at it, but I don't trust them, or maybe just take it to my body shop that has done work on the car before. Any
G guys out have any luck taking out these kind of scratches.

Re: Light scratch but 3M no work..
If the scratches are pretty deep, conventional polishes or glazes will not be able to remove them. The only way, is to either learn exterior detailing or take it to a professional detailing shop to have the scratches removed. Should run you about $200 for a full exterior detailing. I usually charge $225 to remove swirl marks and light scratches. If the scratch picks up a finger nail then, wet sanding will be necessary to remove the scratches.
Hope this helps. If you or anyone here needs some more info about detailing, just post here or pm me.

Meguiars ScratchX is good on scratches, but can leave the surface dull. You should look at Menzerna Final Polish. Not only does it take out scratches and swirls, but it cleans up after itself as it breaks down. Check it out at http://www.properautocare.com/mengerbespol.html. I've used it on minor swirls and it works great!

i'm gonna have to concur w/ wil on this one. you're not going to be able to do much to it if you can *see* it from about 1-2 feet away. the only thing you can do is learn how to take a machine (read pc7424) to it, or have a someone buff it out for you.
if it's extremely light, meaning you can see it if you get up to about a foot away, then you can try doing it by hand. but there is alot of elbow grease involved.

Decided the call Sal Zaino and see what he had to say, figured they have a lot of experience, he said to use 3M
Swirl Remover which I said I did with not much success.
I asked him about Meguirs and of course he said he did
not like any of their products
, he said I can leave it and with
time it might disappear with Zaino 5 treatements and 3M..
Will be at the dealer tomorrow, maybe tell them it happened
last time I was there for work, just kidding, but I will ask them
if they can get it out without f@^%ing it up..

LOL, probably wouldn't matter to them if it had happened there! My last car, had to have the convertible top replaced, and I got a nast scratch on the trim, everyone involved denied they did it, geez, but, that was a Ford dealer, geez!

I do feel a need to inform everyone here that many of the chemicals available in your local is just a glaze that merely covers up scratches. After a few washes, the scratches will reveal itself. To genuinely remove swirl marks, paint scratches, chemical etching (from bird droppings, tree sap, acid rain, paint overspray, etc.), and other paint damage, you would need to have the car professionally detailed to have them removed.
Scratch removal can actually create more problems. I see very often, that customers bring their cars in after trying to remove swirls or scratches by using chemicals w/ the wrong technique and equipment, which actually made more damage (burning the paint, deeper scratches, etc.) to the paint.
If you have the time and will to learn the trade, then props for you, but be careful when trying to do this yourself. Make sure, you don't get frustrated and take your time...............and strength. Also, be sure that everything you use on the car is clean. Dirty cloth, grit filled clays, or something as simple as a chamois that dropped on the floor can actually damage the paint. Just be careful guys!
