Paint thinner should have no efffect on a clear coat, unless it's still wet IMO!

The best, safest thing I've found to use for removing the "goo" is either DeSolve-it or Goo Gone. They are both yellow and smell kind of citrusy...they are safe for the paint...they're made to remove gum, etc. I believe you can find them at the grocery store.
